Winery Background and History

Sidewood Estate, founded by Owen and Cassandra Inglis and located in the cooler macroclimate of Adelaide Hills, South Australia, exemplifies a thoughtful, place-driven approach to winemaking. Since acquiring the 58-hectare Mappinga Road and Charleston vineyards in 2004, they have blended traditional viticulture with modern practices to elevate regional expression in varietals like Pinot Noir.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate’s winemaking brings precision and finesse, led by Darryl Catlin. Their approach includes low-yield vineyard management and wild yeast fermentations using whole-bunch and whole-berry components—methods aimed at drawing out elegance and structure in their wines.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Fruit is sourced from Mappinga Road and Charleston vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. The elevated, cool climate—paired with well-draining soils—preserves vibrant fruit, fine acidity, and elegant aromatics in the Pinot Noir.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Hand-harvested grapes from low-yielding vines ferment using wild yeast, with partial inclusion of whole bunches and whole berries. The wine is then aged for ten months in larger French oak barrels, enhancing depth while maintaining freshness.

Tasting Notes

Complex aromas of strawberries and cream meld with forest floor and bay leaf. The palate is seamless and elegant, featuring red fruit layers and enticing gamey notes of wild mushroom. Ample yet delicate tannins support a generous, lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs beautifully with duck and game dishes—particularly those served with wild mushrooms—as well as earthy, savory preparations featuring red meats or robust vegetables.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve in a medium-to-large Burgundy-style glass at about 16–18 °C. A brief decant can enhance aromatics, though the wine is already approachable at release.

Storage and Aging Potential

Currently drinking beautifully, yet designed to evolve gracefully with careful cellaring over the next several years.
