Winery Background and History
San Giusto a Rentennano is a historic estate located in Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany. Originally a Cistercian monastery, the property was transformed into a fortress in the Middle Ages. Since 1914, it has been owned by the Martini di Cigala family, who have dedicated themselves to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The estate encompasses approximately 160 hectares, with 31 hectares under vine, and has been certified organic since 2001.
Producer and Winemaker
The estate is managed by the Martini di Cigala family, with Enrico Martini di Cigala at the helm. The winemaking team includes oenologist Attilio Pagli and Anita Anichini, who focus on traditional methods combined with modern techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality and character.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards are situated at elevations up to 300 meters above sea level, benefiting from a unique microclimate influenced by Mediterranean breezes and cooling nighttime temperatures. The soils are predominantly calcareous, contributing to the elegance and structure of the wines. The estate practices organic viticulture, emphasizing sustainability and respect for the environment.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2020 Le Baroncole is composed of 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo grapes. Fermentation occurs in concrete and stainless steel tanks over 18–20 days, followed by aging for 16–20 months in French oak barrels and casks. The wine is then bottled and rests for an additional six months before release, allowing it to develop complexity and balance.
Tasting Notes
This wine exhibits an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it offers aromas of cherry and ripe red fruits intertwined with hints of rose, violet, and dark spices, complemented by balsamic and undergrowth notes. The palate is soft and intense, featuring velvety tannins and a long, fruity, and spicy finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
The structured profile and vibrant acidity of this Chianti Classico Riserva make it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs well with grilled meats, such as beef or lamb, as well as hearty stews and aged cheeses. The wine’s elegance also complements dishes featuring earthy ingredients like mushrooms or truffles.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this wine at a temperature of 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving can help open up its aromatic profile and soften the tannins, enhancing the overall tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
With its balanced structure and refined character, the 2020 Le Baroncole has the potential to age gracefully for the next 10–15 years. Proper cellaring conditions—consistent temperature around 13°C (55°F), appropriate humidity, and protection from light and vibration—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time.
