Winery Background and History
Château Calon Ségur, located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a historic estate dating back to the 12th century. The name “Calon” refers to a small boat used in the Middle Ages to transport timber across the Gironde estuary. In the 18th century, the estate was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Château Lafite and Château Latour. Despite his prestigious holdings, he famously stated, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon,” a sentiment reflected in the heart emblem on the label. Today, the estate is owned by Suravenir Assurances and continues to produce wines that embody the elegance and power characteristic of Saint-Estèphe.
Producer and Winemaker
Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur is the third wine of Château Calon Ségur, crafted under the guidance of Technical Director Vincent Millet and consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot. This wine is produced from the estate’s younger vines and is designed to be more approachable in its youth while maintaining the estate’s signature style. The winemaking team focuses on expressing the unique terroir of Saint-Estèphe through meticulous vineyard management and traditional vinification techniques.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards of Château Calon Ségur span approximately 55 hectares in the northern part of the Médoc region. The soils are predominantly gravel over clay subsoils, providing excellent drainage and water retention, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates the climate, reducing the risk of frost and promoting even ripening. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes for Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur are harvested by hand and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure quality. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over extraction and fermentation temperatures. The wine is then aged for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, to impart subtle complexity and structure while preserving the fruit’s freshness.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur presents a deep ruby color. The nose offers aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries, complemented by subtle hints of cedar, tobacco, and graphite. On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, showcasing flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and licorice, along with notes of vanilla and spice. The finish is long and lingering, marked by elegance and balance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled lamb chops, roast beef, duck confit, and mushroom risotto. Its structure and depth complement hearty meats and rich sauces, while its acidity balances creamy textures. Aged cheeses such as Comté or Gouda also make excellent accompaniments.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the 2018 Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its aromatic complexity. Use large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses to concentrate the bouquet and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
When stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—this wine can age gracefully for 5 to 10 years. Over time, it will develop tertiary aromas such as leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances, adding depth and complexity to its profile.
