Winery Background and History
Domaine Muré, established in 1650 in Westhalten, Alsace, is a family-owned estate now led by the 11th and 12th generations, Véronique and Thomas Muré. In 1935, Alfred Muré acquired the Clos Saint Landelin vineyard, a monopole situated at the southern end of the Grand Cru Vorbourg. The estate has been practicing organic viticulture since 1999 and achieved biodynamic certification (Demeter) in 2008. Domaine Muré is renowned for producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Alsace, combining tradition with sustainable practices.
Producer and Winemaker
Véronique and Thomas Muré, siblings and co-managers of Domaine Muré, are dedicated to crafting wines that express the character of their vineyards. They emphasize minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and terroir to shine. Their commitment to biodynamic farming and traditional winemaking techniques ensures the production of high-quality, expressive wines that honor their family’s legacy.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Clos Saint Landelin, a 12-hectare monopole, is located in Rouffach at the southern tip of the Grand Cru Vorbourg. The vineyard’s south-facing slopes benefit from optimal sun exposure and are protected by the Vosges Mountains, creating a favorable microclimate. The soils are composed of marl-limestone with stony elements, providing excellent drainage and mineral richness. A natural spring at the base ensures a consistent water supply, even during dry periods, supporting vine health and grape quality.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested in 20 kg boxes to preserve fruit integrity. Fermentation occurs slowly using native yeasts, followed by maturation on fine lees to enhance complexity and texture. The wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks to maintain purity and freshness, with no oak influence, allowing the Riesling’s varietal characteristics and the vineyard’s terroir to be fully expressed.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 vintage exhibits a delicate nose with aromas of citrus fruits, including lime and lemon zest, complemented by hints of bergamot. On the palate, it is ripe and fruity, showcasing flavors of white peach and stone fruit, balanced by a vibrant acidity and chalky minerality. The wine is fresh and elegant, with a long, lingering finish that reflects its Grand Cru pedigree.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Riesling pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its acidity and minerality complement seafood such as scallops, cod, and salmon. It also enhances the flavors of poultry dishes, creamy sauces, and Asian cuisine, including sushi and spicy Thai dishes. The wine’s freshness and complexity make it a versatile companion for both delicate and richly flavored foods.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve this wine chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its aromatic profile and crisp acidity. Use a white wine glass with a narrow bowl to concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expression.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2019 Clos Saint Landelin Riesling has excellent aging potential. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—it can develop additional complexity over 10–15 years. With time, the wine will evolve, revealing notes of honey, petrol, and dried fruits, while maintaining its structural integrity and freshness.
