Winery Background and History
Puchang Vineyard, located in Turpan Valley, Xinjiang, China, was originally established in 1975 and revitalized in 2008 by Hong Kong entrepreneur K.K. Cheung. The estate spans approximately 100 hectares and is dedicated to organic viticulture, certified by ECOCERT since 2013. Puchang focuses on producing premium wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region, characterized by its desert climate and significant diurnal temperature variations.
Producer and Winemaker
The winery is led by Director Clara Wang, with Italian consultant winemaker Loris Tartaglia overseeing production since 2013. Tartaglia brings international experience, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the wines to express the distinct characteristics of Xinjiang’s terroir. The winemaking team is committed to sustainable practices, producing wines that are organic and vegan-friendly.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Situated near the Tianshan Mountains Basin, Turpan Valley is known as the “Fire Island” due to its extreme climate. The region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures reaching up to 50°C and cold winters dropping to -13°C. With minimal rainfall (16–20mm annually) and over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the area provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation, resulting in wines with high sugar content, vibrant acidity, and intense flavors.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous selection to ensure quality. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels to enhance complexity and structure. The winemaking process emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and terroir to shine through.
Tasting Notes
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva exhibits a deep garnet color with a slight purple hue. The nose offers intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries, and plum, complemented by notes of tobacco, cedar, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, featuring flavors of ripe black fruit, leather, graphite, and subtle herbaceousness. The wine has smooth, well-integrated tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, layered finish with lingering notes of dark fruits and spice.
Food & Wine Pairing
This robust Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with grilled meats such as lamb chops, beef steaks, and venison. It also complements hearty dishes like beef stew, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses. The wine’s bold flavors and firm structure make it suitable for pairing with rich, savory meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors. Use a Bordeaux-style glass to concentrate the bouquet and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with stable humidity—this vintage has the potential to age gracefully for 10 to 15 years. Over time, it will develop deeper tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances, adding to its complexity and allure. Collectors and enthusiasts can anticipate continued evolution and refinement with extended cellaring.
