Winery Background and History

Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger in Épernay, Champagne, the house of Pol Roger remains family-owned and is renowned for its commitment to quality and tradition. Over the years, it has earned a distinguished reputation, notably as the preferred Champagne of Sir Winston Churchill. The estate owns 92 hectares of vineyards, primarily located in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, supplying over half of its grape requirements. Pol Roger is celebrated for producing Champagnes that exemplify elegance, balance, and refinement.

Producer and Winemaker

Pol Roger’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. The current cellar master, Damien Cambres, upholds the house’s traditional methods, including the use of stainless steel fermentation and extended aging on lees. Each vintage reflects the unique characteristics of its harvest year, crafted to express both the terroir and the house’s signature style. The dedication of the winemaking team ensures that each bottle maintains the esteemed reputation Pol Roger has cultivated over generations.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for the 2018 Brut Vintage are sourced exclusively from Grands and Premiers Crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. These regions are characterized by chalky soils and a continental climate, providing optimal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2018 growing season experienced a wet winter followed by a warm, dry summer, resulting in healthy, ripe grapes with excellent balance and concentration. This favorable climate contributed to the vintage’s expressive fruit profile and aging potential.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2018 Brut Vintage is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures to preserve freshness and purity. Each varietal and vineyard parcel is vinified separately before blending. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and is aged for approximately six years in Pol Roger’s deep, cool cellars. A dosage of 7 grams per liter is added before release, balancing the wine’s acidity and enhancing its complexity.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Pol Roger Brut Vintage displays a pale yellow hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is initially subtle, revealing aromas of fresh fruits like pineapple and white peach, which evolve into notes of fresh butter and pastry cream with aeration. On the palate, the wine is round and full-bodied, showcasing flavors of ripe orchard fruits, sweet spices, and brioche. A tangy finish with hints of lemon and citrus adds freshness, indicating promising aging potential.

Food & Wine Pairing

This vintage Champagne pairs elegantly with a variety of dishes. Its richness complements seafood such as lobster, scallops, and oysters. The wine’s acidity and complexity also make it an excellent match for poultry dishes, creamy risottos, and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert. For a luxurious pairing, serve alongside foie gras or sushi to enhance the wine’s nuanced flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2018 Pol Roger Brut Vintage well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) in a white wine glass or traditional Champagne flute to concentrate its aromas and showcase its effervescence. No decanting is necessary. Allow the wine a few minutes in the glass to open up and reveal its full aromatic profile. This Champagne is suitable for immediate enjoyment or can be cellared for further development.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2018 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years. Over time, the wine will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes such as toasted nuts, honey, and dried fruits emerging, enhancing its depth and richness.
