Winery Background and History
Planeta is a pioneering Sicilian family winery founded in 1995, with ancestral estates tracing back to the 1600s in Sambuca di Sicilia. Under Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, the winery led Sicily’s modern winemaking renaissance, combining indigenous varieties and sustainable practices across six estates. La Segreta Rosso represents their accessible yet authentic expression of Sicily’s terroir, rooted in Ulmo and Menfi vineyards.
Producer and Wine Maker
Produced by Planeta’s expert wine team, this blend reflects both tradition and precision. Grapes are handpicked from family-owned vineyards, directed by skilled agronomists and enologists who oversee fermentation and aging in stainless steel, ensuring varietal clarity and consistency. ()
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Grapes for La Segreta Rosso are sourced from the Dispensa, Gurra and Buonivini vineyards near Menfi and Noto in western Sicily. These sites (altitudes 35–75 m) feature lime-rich soils, warm Mediterranean climate moderated by sea breezes, yielding ripe fruit and balanced acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested from August 30 to September 26, grapes are destemmed, crushed, then fermented in stainless steel vats with frequent pump-overs over 7–14 days. Malofermentation completes in tank, followed by maturation in steel, preserving freshness and varietal character.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby-red with violet hues. Aromas of mulberries, black plums, cassis, and fine spicy-mint nuances. Medium-bodied with fresh dark fruit, well-integrated soft tannins, and a clean, herbal-tinged finish with balsamic accents.
Food & Wine Pairing
Versatile with grilled red meats, pasta with meat-based sauces, charcuterie, game dishes, and bbq. Also enjoyable with mushroom risotto or aged cheeses, bringing balance and freshness. ()
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18 °C (61–64 °F) in medium-bodied red or tulip-shaped glass. A gentle swirl helps release aromas; can rest briefly in the glass to open up. ()
Storage and Aging Potential
Enjoyable now; best consumed within 3–5 years. When cellared at around 12–14 °C in stable, dark conditions, it may develop richer tertiary notes. ()
