Winery Background and History
Placido Chianti is produced under the Banfi umbrella, a renowned winery established in 1978 by the Mariani family in Montalcino, Tuscany. The Placido label pays homage to Count Placido dei Placidi, a 13th-century Tuscan nobleman celebrated for his valor in the Battle of Montaperti. Awarded a vast estate for his heroism, Count Placido fostered a legacy of winemaking that continues to inspire the Placido brand today.
Producer and Winemaker
The Placido Chianti is crafted by Banfi’s experienced winemaking team, who focus on creating approachable yet expressive wines that showcase the character of Tuscany’s terroir. Their expertise ensures that each bottle reflects the rich heritage and quality associated with the Banfi name.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Placido Chianti are sourced from the historic Tuscan hills within the delimited Chianti DOCG zone. The region’s favorable climate, with warm days and cool nights, along with varied soils ranging from well-drained calcareous to moist clay, contribute to the wine’s complexity and balance.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Maceration with the skins lasts for 8–12 days during primary fermentation. After pressing, a second fermentation takes place, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for five to six months before bottling, preserving its fresh fruit characteristics.
Tasting notes
Placido Chianti 2023 presents a ruby red color. The nose offers an intense aroma that hints of violets. On the palate, it is dry and well-balanced, with black-fruit flavors followed by a long finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
