Winery Background and History
Vega Sicilia, established in 1864, is one of Spain’s most prestigious wineries, renowned for producing world-class wines. Located in the Ribera del Duero region, the estate has a rich history of excellence and innovation. In 1997, Vega Sicilia expanded into the Toro region with the creation of Bodegas Pintia, aiming to craft wines that reflect the unique terroir of Toro while maintaining the winery’s commitment to quality and elegance.
Producer and Winemaker
Bodegas Pintia is part of the Tempos Vega Sicilia group, under the ownership of the Álvarez family. The winemaking team, led by Pablo Álvarez, focuses on expressing the character of the Tinta de Toro grape through meticulous vineyard management and innovative winemaking techniques. Their approach balances tradition with modernity, ensuring each vintage showcases the distinctiveness of the region.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Pintia vineyards are situated on the banks of the Duero River in the Toro appellation, characterized by extreme continental climate conditions—hot summers and cold winters. The soils are rich in pebbles and sand, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the concentration and structure of the wines. The 2019 vintage benefited from a very dry year, necessitating careful vineyard management to preserve freshness and balance.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were harvested early to maintain acidity and freshness. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel and oak vats using indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation took place in 100% wood. The wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of 70% French and 30% American oak barrels, with 80% being new oak. Additionally, 15% of the wine was aged in large oak foudres to preserve fruit purity.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Pintia exhibits a deep cherry red color with cardinal edges. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and exotic spices, complemented by notes of cocoa powder and tar. The palate is rich and full-bodied, displaying a saline touch in the mid-palate, fine-grained tannins, and a long, powerful finish. Despite its intensity, the wine maintains elegance and refinement.
Food & Wine Pairing
This robust Tempranillo pairs excellently with grilled red meats, game dishes, and aged cheeses. Its bold flavors and structured tannins complement hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, beef stew, or venison. The wine’s complexity also allows it to stand up to spicy cuisine and rich sauces.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine at 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structure. Decanting for at least one hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full range of flavors and aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2019 Pintia has excellent aging potential and can be cellared for 10 to 15 years. Over time, the wine will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances emerging.
