Winery Background and History
De Bortoli Wines, established in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, has grown into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.
Producer and Winemaker
The 2022 PHI Lusatia Park Pinot Noir was crafted under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Steve Webber, who brings extensive experience and a passion for producing premium wines. Webber’s meticulous approach ensures that each vintage maintains its renowned quality and character. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the Pinot Noir grapes to shine through in the final product.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Lusatia Park Vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley, known for its diverse microclimates and fertile soils. The 2022 growing season featured average rains during winter and early spring, benefiting vine health and fruitfulness. A mild growing season with no prolonged heatwaves provided perfect ripening conditions, allowing the fruit to retain good varietal characteristics and to be harvested at optimal ripeness and flavor.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The fruit was hand-picked and sorted to open fermenters. A combination of whole berries and whole bunches was used. Fermentation occurred with ambient yeast, and a mixture of hand plunging and gentle turnovers was employed. The wine underwent 15–20 days of maceration, then was pressed and racked to new and used French oak barriques for 7 months of maturation.
Tasting notes
The 2022 PHI Lusatia Park Pinot Noir exhibits a light ruby red color. The nose offers aromas of wild raspberries, currants, cherries, and earthiness. On the palate, it presents flavors of cherries, umami, raspberries, and spices. The wine is ethereal, transparent, and expressive, with intense bright flavors, gentle and opulent texture, fine tannins, spice, and a silky finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Pinot Noir pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roast duck with Chinese five-spice, grilled salmon, and mushroom risotto. Its vibrant acidity and supple tannins also complement dishes like lamb shanks, grilled vegetables, and aged cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this Pinot Noir, serve it at a temperature between 16–18°C (61–64°F). Use red wine glasses with a slightly wider bowl to allow the aromas to develop. Decanting for 30 minutes prior to serving can help open up the wine’s bouquet and enhance its flavors. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, oak, and acidity to shine through with elegance and balance.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2022 PHI Lusatia Park Pinot Noir is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 5–10 years.
