Winery Background and History

Founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose Adélaïde Jouët in Épernay, Perrier-Jouët is renowned for its elegant, floral Champagnes, emphasizing Chardonnay grapes. The house’s Belle Epoque series, introduced in 1964, features the iconic Japanese anemone motif designed by Emile Gallé in 1902. Today, Perrier-Jouët is part of the Pernod Ricard group, producing approximately 3 million bottles annually, with a focus on quality and artistry.

Producer and Winemaker

The 1998 vintage was crafted under the guidance of Hervé Deschamps, Perrier-Jouët’s seventh Cellar Master. Deschamps is celebrated for his ability to highlight the delicate floral nuances of Chardonnay, maintaining the house’s signature style of elegance and finesse. His meticulous approach ensures each cuvée reflects the purity and complexity that define Perrier-Jouët’s offerings.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Chardonnay grapes for this cuvée were sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, notably Cramant and Avize, known for their chalky soils and favorable microclimates. The Pinot Noir component was selected from the Montagne de Reims, contributing structure and depth. The 1998 vintage experienced excellent ripening conditions, resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The wine underwent traditional Champagne vinification, with primary fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness. After blending, it underwent secondary fermentation in the bottle and was aged on lees for approximately seven years, enhancing its complexity and texture. A dosage of 8 g/L was added upon disgorgement, classifying it as a Brut Champagne.

Tasting Notes

The 1998 Belle Epoque Brut exhibits a pale gold hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose reveals aromas of white flowers, stone fruits like pear and peach, with hints of almond, brioche, and honey. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, offering flavors of white peach, pear, brioche, and almond. The finish is long and balanced, with a touch of minerality and citrus.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Champagne pairs wonderfully with refined dishes such as lobster, white truffle risotto, seared scallops, and mild cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Its acidity and minerality complement rich seafood preparations and creamy textures, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this Champagne chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a white wine glass or a tulip-shaped Champagne flute to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its expressive qualities. This Champagne is best enjoyed in its youth to capture its vibrant freshness, but it also has the potential to evolve with additional bottle age.

Storage and Aging Potential

When stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—this Champagne can continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5 to 10 years. Over time, it is expected to develop richer, more nuanced flavors, including notes of honey and toasted nuts, while retaining its underlying freshness and elegance.
