Winery Background and History

Founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose Adélaïde Jouët, Perrier-Jouët is renowned for its elegant Champagnes and commitment to artistry. The house gained prominence with its iconic Belle Epoque cuvée, introduced in 1969, featuring the anemone motif designed by Emile Gallé in 1902. Perrier-Jouët’s dedication to Chardonnay and its floral, refined style have solidified its status as a symbol of luxury and craftsmanship in the Champagne region.

Producer and Winemaker

Perrier-Jouët’s cellar master, Hervé Deschamps, was instrumental in crafting the house’s signature style, emphasizing finesse and floral elegance. For the 2004 Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs, Deschamps selected exceptional Chardonnay grapes to create a cuvée that embodies purity and sophistication. The collaboration with Japanese glass artist Ritsue Mishima for the limited edition bottle underscores the house’s fusion of oenological excellence and artistic expression.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Chardonnay grapes for this cuvée were sourced exclusively from the Côte des Blancs, particularly the renowned Grand Cru villages of Cramant and Avize. These vineyards benefit from chalky soils and a cool climate, contributing to the grapes’ high acidity and minerality. The 2004 vintage experienced a cool spring followed by a warm summer, resulting in grapes with exceptional balance and aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The wine underwent traditional Champagne vinification, with primary fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness. Malolactic fermentation was completed to soften acidity. The cuvée was aged on lees for over six years, enhancing its texture and complexity. Disgorgement occurred prior to release, with a Brut dosage added to maintain balance and highlight the wine’s elegance.

Tasting Notes

The 2004 Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs reveals a luminous golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose offers delicate aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits, and hints of vanilla. On the palate, it is vibrant and refined, showcasing flavors of white peach, grapefruit, and subtle notes of brioche. The finish is long and mineral-driven, reflecting the purity of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Champagne pairs exquisitely with seafood dishes such as oysters, scallops, and lobster, where its acidity complements the richness of the seafood. It also harmonizes with delicate white fish preparations and creamy cheeses like Brie or Camembert. For an elegant pairing, consider serving it alongside sushi or sashimi to accentuate its freshness and finesse.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this Champagne chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a white wine glass to allow its aromas to fully develop. Avoid using narrow flutes, as they can restrict the expression of the wine’s bouquet. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes in the glass can enhance its complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and humid—the 2004 Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs can continue to evolve gracefully for another 5 to 10 years. Over time, it will develop richer, more nuanced flavors, including notes of honey and toasted nuts, while retaining its underlying freshness and elegance.
