Winery Background and History
Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a historic winery located in the Rhône Valley of France. Over nearly two centuries, the estate has built a reputation for producing exceptional wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of the region. In 2006, the Frey family, known for their commitment to quality and sustainability, acquired the estate. Under their stewardship, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, enhancing the expression of their vineyards’ unique characteristics.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Paul Jaboulet Aîné is led by Caroline Frey, an accomplished oenologist and viticulturist. Since joining the estate in 2006, Caroline has been instrumental in transitioning the vineyards to organic and biodynamic practices, focusing on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Her philosophy centers on minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the natural expression of the terroir and grape varietals to shine through in each wine.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The ‘Les Jalets’ cuvée is sourced from vineyards located in the Les Chassis terraces within the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The name ‘Les Jalets’ refers to the large, round stones, or ‘galets,’ deposited by ancient glaciers, which characterize the vineyard soils. These stones absorb heat during the day and release it at night, promoting optimal ripening of the Syrah grapes. The region experiences a continental climate with Mediterranean influences, marked by hot summers and mild winters, providing ideal conditions for viticulture.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2022 vintage began with hand-harvesting of organically farmed Syrah grapes from 25-year-old vines. After careful sorting and destemming, the grapes underwent a three-week maceration period with daily pump-overs to extract color, flavor, and tannins. Fermentation was conducted using traditional methods, followed by aging for 12 months in a combination of French oak vats (50%), French oak barrels (25%), and stainless steel vats (25%). This approach balances oak influence with the preservation of fresh fruit characteristics.

Tasting Notes
The 2022 Les Jalets Crozes-Hermitage presents a deep garnet red color. On the nose, it offers aromas of raspberry and wild strawberry, complemented by spicy notes such as licorice. The palate is characterized by ripe fresh raspberry fruit with a rocky mineral quality, leading to a perfumed and silky mouthfeel. A nutty note emerges on the finish, adding complexity to the wine’s profile. The tannins are silky and refined, contributing to a harmonious and elegant structure.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile Syrah pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its fruit-forward profile and balanced acidity make it an excellent match for pepper-crusted steak or braised stews, where the wine’s spiciness complements the savory flavors. Vegetarian options such as eggplant parmesan, grilled zucchini, or mushroom-based dishes also harmonize with the wine’s earthy undertones. For cheese pairings, consider aged varieties like Gouda or Cheddar, which enhance the wine’s depth and complexity.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture, serve the 2022 Les Jalets Crozes-Hermitage at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help to aerate it, allowing the bouquet to open up and the tannins to soften. Utilizing medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate, enhancing the overall tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature around 12°C (54°F), and with moderate humidity—the 2022 Les Jalets Crozes-Hermitage has the potential to age gracefully for up to 10 years. As it matures, the wine is expected to develop additional layers of complexity, with tertiary notes such as leather, dried fruits, and earthy nuances emerging to complement the existing fruit and spice profile. Regularly monitoring the wine’s development will ensure it is enjoyed at its peak maturity.
