Winery Background and History

Otronia is a pioneering winery located in Sarmiento, Chubut, in the southernmost region of Patagonia, Argentina. Established with the vision of producing exceptional cool-climate wines, Otronia operates at the edge of viticultural possibility, where extreme conditions challenge conventional winemaking. The estate is committed to organic and sustainable practices, aiming to reflect the purity and uniqueness of its terroir. Otronia’s dedication to innovation and quality has positioned it as a notable producer in the emerging Patagonian wine scene.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Otronia is led by Juan Pablo Murgia, a passionate advocate for expressing the distinctiveness of Patagonia’s terroir. Murgia’s approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques to craft wines that embody elegance and complexity. His commitment to organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar ensures that each bottle authentically represents the vineyard’s character. Under his guidance, Otronia has gained recognition for producing high-quality sparkling wines that capture the essence of their origin.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Otronia’s vineyards are situated at 45°33′S latitude, making them among the southernmost in the world. The region’s cool climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations, contributes to the slow ripening of grapes, enhancing flavor development and acidity. The soils are predominantly alluvial with a mix of sand and clay, providing excellent drainage and promoting vine health. The challenging conditions, including strong winds and low rainfall, necessitate meticulous vineyard management, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality and concentration.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The Otronia Brut Nature NV is crafted using the traditional method (méthode traditionnelle), where secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle. The base wine, composed primarily of Chardonnay, undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh fruit character. After blending, the wine is bottled with a liqueur de tirage to initiate secondary fermentation. It is then aged on lees for 25 months, enhancing complexity and texture. The wine is disgorged without dosage, resulting in a Brut Nature style that showcases purity and precision.

Tasting Notes

This sparkling wine exhibits a pale yellow hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose offers aromas of green apple, citrus zest, and subtle floral notes, complemented by hints of toasted brioche and minerality. On the palate, it is crisp and vibrant, with flavors of lemon, pear, and a touch of almond. The extended lees aging imparts a creamy texture and depth, while the absence of dosage ensures a dry, refreshing finish. The wine’s balance and elegance make it a compelling expression of Patagonian terroir.

Food & Wine Pairing

Otronia Brut Nature NV pairs excellently with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and fine mousse complement seafood such as oysters, scallops, and sushi. The wine’s minerality and crispness also make it a suitable match for light appetizers, goat cheese, and fresh salads. For a more substantial pairing, consider grilled chicken or dishes with creamy sauces, where the wine’s structure can cut through richness and enhance flavors. Its versatility makes it an ideal choice for both casual and celebratory occasions.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of Otronia Brut Nature NV, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 6–8°C (43–46°F). Use a tulip-shaped sparkling wine glass to concentrate the aromas and allow the bubbles to develop gracefully. No decanting is necessary. Opening the bottle carefully and pouring gently will preserve the wine’s effervescence. Consuming the wine shortly after opening ensures the freshest experience, highlighting its delicate flavors and vibrant acidity.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store the wine in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 10–13°C (50–55°F) and moderate humidity. While Otronia Brut Nature NV is enjoyable upon release, its structure and lees aging suggest potential for further development over the next 3–5 years. With time, the wine may evolve, gaining additional complexity and nuanced tertiary aromas. However, its freshness and vitality are most pronounced in its youth, making it a delightful choice for immediate enjoyment.
