Winery Background and History

Bodega Otronia is situated in the heart of Patagonia, Argentina, at the 45°33′ southern latitude, making it one of the southernmost vineyards globally. Established by Alejandro Bulgheroni, the winery embraces organic viticulture and aims to showcase the unique terroir of Chubut. The extreme climatic conditions, including strong winds, low rainfall, and significant temperature variations, contribute to the distinctive character of their wines. Otronia’s commitment to sustainability and innovation has positioned it as a pioneer in producing high-quality wines in challenging environments.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking at Otronia is led by Juan Pablo Murgia, a dedicated winemaker passionate about expressing the terroir of Patagonia. Collaborating with renowned Italian consultant Alberto Antonini, Murgia focuses on minimal intervention techniques to preserve the natural expression of the grapes. Their combined expertise ensures that each wine reflects the purity and complexity of its origin, with a particular emphasis on balance, freshness, and elegance.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for the Block 3&6 Chardonnay are sourced from Vineyard 22, specifically blocks 3 and 6, located in Sarmiento, Chubut. This region experiences a cold and dry climate, with strong winds and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The soils are heterogeneous, comprising sandy and clayey compositions, which, combined with the climatic conditions, contribute to the wine’s vibrant acidity and mineral complexity. The vineyard’s organic farming practices further enhance the expression of the unique Patagonian terroir.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvested between March 22nd and 24th, the Chardonnay grapes underwent direct pressing, followed by static settling. Fermentation occurred at 15°C to preserve aromatic freshness. Notably, malolactic fermentation was avoided to maintain the wine’s natural acidity. The wine was then aged for 16 months in large French oak foudres, allowing for subtle oak integration without overpowering the varietal character. This approach results in a wine that balances texture, complexity, and freshness.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Block 3&6 Chardonnay presents a pale yellow hue with greenish reflections. On the nose, it offers aromas of white fruits like peach and pear, complemented by floral notes and subtle hints of chamomile tea and thyme, evoking the natural environment of the vineyard. The palate is marked by its freshness, depth, vibrancy, and a long, persistent finish. The wine’s natural acidity provides a lively character and tension, ensuring a balanced and elegant profile.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its freshness and complexity complement seafood such as grilled sea bass or scallops, as well as poultry dishes like roasted chicken with herbs. It also harmonizes with creamy cheeses, risottos, and vegetable-based dishes, enhancing the flavors without overpowering them. The wine’s versatility makes it suitable for both casual meals and refined culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of the Block 3&6 Chardonnay, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 8°C and 10°C (46°F to 50°F). Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and deliver the wine’s full expression on the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2020 vintage of Otronia Block 3&6 Chardonnay possesses excellent aging potential due to its vibrant acidity and structured profile. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—the wine can evolve gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. Over time, it is expected to develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes complementing its existing freshness and minerality.
