Winery Background and History
Established in 1993, Oremus Winery is located in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region of northeastern Hungary. It is part of the renowned Tempos Vega Sicilia group, known for its commitment to quality and tradition. The winery focuses on producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Tokaj, utilizing indigenous grape varieties and combining centuries-old winemaking practices with modern techniques.
Producer and Winemaker
Oremus operates under the ownership of the Álvarez family, proprietors of Vega Sicilia. The winemaking team emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the terroir to shine through. Their approach ensures that each bottle of wine authentically represents the heritage and quality associated with the Oremus name.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for the 2021 Mandolás Furmint are sourced from the Mandolás vineyard, exclusively planted with Furmint, the noblest variety of the region. Located in the Tokaj-Hegyalja area, the vineyard benefits from volcanic soils and a favorable microclimate, contributing to the wine’s distinctive minerality and aromatic complexity. The region’s unique conditions, including its elevation and exposure, play a crucial role in the development of the grapes’ character.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are handpicked at optimal ripeness and gently pressed to obtain a high-density must. Fermentation occurs over 8 to 12 days in new Hungarian oak barrels. The wine is aged in 136-liter small barrels, typical of the region, with regular lees stirring (batonnage) for the first month, followed by a further five months of aging without stirring. This meticulous process results in a wine that balances freshness with depth and structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Mandolás Furmint presents a vibrant mineral profile on the nose, enveloped in notes of white peach, cantaloupe, and tart lemon juice. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, featuring flavors of green apple, grapefruit, and a touch of white pepper. The wine boasts a lively acidity and a long, elegant finish, showcasing its balance and complexity.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Furmint pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including shellfish, grilled fish, and fresh salads. Its crisp acidity and citrus notes complement tangy goat cheese and feta, while its fruit-forward profile enhances dishes with citrus-based sauces or herbal accents. Asian cuisine, particularly dishes featuring lemongrass or ginger, also harmonizes well with this wine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2021 vintage is best enjoyed within 2 to 3 years of release to capture its vibrant freshness and aromatic intensity. While it can be consumed immediately, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
