Winery Background and History

Newton Vineyard, founded in 1977 by Peter and Sua Newton in St. Helena, Napa, was acquired by LVMH in 2001. It established itself with single-vineyard Chardonnay and Cabernet expressions. The Mount Veeder site, planted in the early 1970s and replanted mainly to Cabernet in recent decades, sits at 750–1,250 ft elevation on steep, sedimentary soils—recognized for producing mountain-grown, minerally Cabernet with longevity  .

Producer and Wine Maker

Winemaking blends traditional craftsmanship with precise sorting and aging. The 2015 vintage grapes were hand-harvested, optical-sorted, fermented in small-lot batches, then aged 12 months in new French oak before blending and additional barrel aging  .

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Mount Veeder vineyard’s altitude and proximity to San Pablo Bay provide a cool, long growing season. Steep slopes and well-drained volcanic soil yield intensely flavored berries, with a distinctive mountain signature of cassis and graphite structure  .

Vinification & Aging Methods

Hand-harvested, destemmed, optical-sorted fruit underwent separate small-batch fermentation with careful phenolic extraction. Post malolactic fermentation, the wine matured first for 12 months in 60% new French oak, then returned to barrel for an additional 6 months  .

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet-purple. Rich aromas of cassis, blueberry compote, black forest cake, spicebox, and cigar. Palate is medium-to-full-bodied with structured, plush tannins, slate/graphite minerality, black olives, aniseed, and a long savory finish  .

Food & Wine Pairing

Ideal with grilled beef or venison, hearty mushroom dishes, braised short ribs, and aged, firm cheeses—enhancing its powerful fruit and structured tannins  .

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 16–18 °C in a large Bordeaux-style glass. Decant for 1–2 hours to soften tannins and allow complex aromatics to reveal. Revisit periodically for evolving depth.

Storage and Aging Potential

Drinking window: 2017–2035. Cellaring in cool (12–14 °C), humid, and dark conditions will preserve and enhance its structure  .

Grape Varietals & percentage used
