Winery Background and History
Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët in Épernay, Moët & Chandon evolved from a small négociant to one of the world’s largest Champagne houses, now part of LVMH. The Impérial line, launched in the 1860s, reflects the House’s philosophy of consistent quality, blending bright fruitiness, fine mousse, and refined creaminess. With 1,190 ha of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards and annual production of over 28 million bottles, Impérial is the flagship non-vintage cuvée that showcases centuries of blending expertise and winemaking innovation
Producer and Wine Maker
Cellar Master Benoît Gouez, supported by a tasting panel, meticulously assembles more than 100 base and reserve wines each year to achieve the signature Impérial style. For gift-box formats, the same precision applies, with careful attention to balance, texture, and aromatic intensity. A small portion of wine is aged in oak to add depth, while extended lees aging develops finesse ()
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Grapes are sourced from Grand and Premier Cru sites across Champagne: Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims, Pinot Meunier from Vallée de la Marne, and Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs. The chalk-rich soils and cool maritime climate with diurnal temperature swings give the grapes vibrant acidity, mineral purity, and consistent ripeness ()
Vinification & Aging Methods
Parcels ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; about 5–10 % of the blend undergoes oak maturation. The final cuvée includes 20–30 % reserve wines. After blending, secondary in-bottle fermentation occurs, followed by a minimum of 24 months on lees. Dosage sits around 9–10 g/L, balancing freshness and richness ()
Tasting notes
Golden straw with green highlights. Aromas of green apple, pear, white peach, citrus blossom, brioche, and fresh nuts. On the palate it is creamy yet crisp, featuring white peach, pear, salted almond, citrus peel, and subtle toast, finishing precise with fine mineral tension
Food & Wine Pairing
Exceptional as an aperitif. Pairs beautifully with oysters, crab, lobster, sushi, grilled fish, poultry dishes, creamy sauces, and soft cheeses. Its refined texture and vibrant acidity enhance both delicate and richer flavors ()
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve chilled at 8–10 °C in tulip-shaped or white-wine glasses to concentrate aromatics and preserve mousse. No decanting is required; a gentle swirl enhances bouquet and texture ()
Storage and Aging Potential
When cellared at 9–12 °C with 70–80 % humidity and no light, Impérial develops gracefully over 5–8 years. Over time it gains tertiary notes of honey, brioche, nuts, and pastry while retaining structure and freshness ()
