Winery Background and History

Marqués de Riscal, founded in 1858 in Rioja Alavesa, is one of Spain’s most historic and respected wineries. The Viña Collada is their approachable entry-level Rioja—a modern expression offering freshness, fruit-driven appeal, and tradition in equal measure. Originally produced with fruit from younger vines, it embodies the region’s balance of fruit and structure with a smooth, accessible style.

Producer and Wine Maker

This wine is crafted by Marqués de Riscal’s in-house winemaking team. Grapes are hand-harvested, gently crushed, and fermented in stainless steel with controlled temperatures. It undergoes lees aging to enhance mouthfeel, followed by a short barrel period in American oak to add complexity without overshadowing vibrant fruit.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Sourced from vineyards with ~20-year-old vines in Rioja DOCa—likely Rioja Alavesa—the region features mineral-rich limestone soils, continental climate, and diurnal shifts. These conditions contribute to lifted aromatics, freshness, and structural balance.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Fermentation occurs in stainless steel under temperature control. After fermentation, the wine ages on fine lees for several months and spends approximately four months in American oak barrels to soften tannins and develop added depth.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby to plum red colour with garnet edges. Aromas reveal expressive plums, blackcurrants, blueberries, mulberries, along with hints of cinnamon, black tea, leather, and vanilla. The palate is dry, velvety, and full-bodied, with balanced acidity and a long, mineral-tinged finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs well with rich and savory dishes such as lamb stew with chickpeas and dried figs, spinach gratin with almonds, duck breast with gingered red cabbage, or hearty barbecues.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 15–18 °C using a Bordeaux-style glass to accentuate fruit aromas and textural nuances.

Storage and Aging Potential

Likely best enjoyed within approximately 6 years from vintage—so through around 2027—offering early charm with moderate cellar potential.

Grape Varietals & percentage used

Primarily Tempranillo. Some sources note inclusion of Graciano and Mazuelo, though percentages aren’t disclosed in tasting data.
