Winery Background and History
Marqués de Riscal, founded in Rioja in 1858, is among Spain’s oldest and most respected wineries. In the 1970s, they pioneered planting the Verdejo grape in the Rueda region, recognizing its unique potential. Since 2018, their Verdejo wines—including this Rueda Blanc—have been certified organic, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and pure varietal expression.
Producer and Wine Maker
The wine is crafted by the estate winemaking team at Marqués de Riscal. Using organically farmed estate vineyards, they practice minimal intervention, combining cold fermentation and lees contact to preserve varietal purity, texture, and fresh complexity.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Sourced from estate-owned vineyards in Castilla y León (Rueda DO), these mature Verdejo vines thrive in continental climatic conditions—hot days, cool nights—and mineral-rich soils of sand, lime, and gravel. These conditions preserve acidity and enhance aromatic intensity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After harvest, grapes undergo cold maceration, then fermentation in stainless steel at 13–15 °C. The wine then ages on its fine lees for 1–2 months with regular bâtonnage before bottling, adding texture and depth without losing freshness.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw-yellow in color. It opens with vivid aromas of fennel, white flowers, aniseed, and fresh grass. The palate is lively and smooth, with generous, persistent flavors and a long, pleasant finish characteristic of Verdejo.
Food & Wine Pairing
Ideal with seafood, shellfish, fish, chicken, charcuterie, ham, and pasta. Its aromatic intensity, freshness, and refined texture make it versatile across light to savory dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve well chilled, around 8–10 °C, to preserve its aromatic clarity and refreshing palate.
Storage and Aging Potential
Best enjoyed now through approximately 3–4 years from vintage. Its crispness and balanced acidity suggest moderate short-to-mid-term cellaring.
