Winery Background and History
Founded in 2001 by winemaker Brian Bicknell, Mahi Wines is located in Marlborough, New Zealand. The name “Mahi” means “our work, our craft” in Māori, reflecting the winery’s dedication to producing wines that express the unique characteristics of their vineyard sites. Mahi focuses on single-vineyard wines and employs traditional winemaking techniques to highlight the diversity and quality of Marlborough’s sub-regions.
Producer and Winemaker
Brian Bicknell, the founder and chief winemaker of Mahi Wines, brings extensive experience from his work in New Zealand and abroad. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the fruit to express its origin. Bicknell’s approach includes hand-picking, whole-cluster pressing, and the use of wild yeasts to ferment the wines, aiming to produce complex and textural expressions of Sauvignon Blanc that reflect the nuances of each vineyard.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from six different vineyards across Marlborough, each contributing distinct characteristics to the blend. These sites benefit from Marlborough’s cool, maritime climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations that preserve acidity and enhance aromatic development. The region’s diverse soils, including alluvial loams and clay, further contribute to the complexity and minerality of the wine.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes were hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed to preserve delicate aromatics. Approximately 19% of the juice underwent wild fermentation, and 7% was fermented in seasoned French oak barrels, adding texture and complexity. The wine was aged on lees for eight months, enhancing its mouthfeel and integrating the flavors. The final blend was composed solely of free-run juice, resulting in a wine that balances freshness with depth.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Mahi Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc exhibits aromas of lemon peel, passion fruit, and cut grass. On the palate, it is light-bodied with tightly wound acidity and a generous texture, offering notes of candied lime zest, orange blossoms, and slate. The wine is well-constructed and sophisticated, showcasing a harmonious balance between vibrant fruit and mineral complexity.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauvignon Blanc pairs excellently with a variety of seafood dishes, including oysters, scallops, and grilled fish. Its crisp acidity and citrus notes complement fresh salads, goat cheese, and dishes featuring herbs like basil and cilantro. The wine’s textural complexity also allows it to pair well with lightly spiced Asian cuisine and vegetarian dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. While the 2023 vintage is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it can develop additional complexity over the next 2 to 3 years. Proper storage will maintain its quality and allow for the evolution of secondary flavors.
