Mahi Twin Valleys Chardonnay 2022

Winery Background and History

Mahi Wines, established in 2001 by Brian and Nicola Bicknell, is a boutique winery located in Marlborough, New Zealand. The name “Mahi” translates to “our work, our craft” in Māori, reflecting the founders’ dedication to producing wines that express the unique characteristics of their vineyards. With a focus on single-vineyard selections and minimal intervention winemaking, Mahi has garnered a reputation for crafting wines that showcase the purity and diversity of Marlborough’s terroir.

Producer and Winemaker

Brian Bicknell, formerly the head winemaker at Seresin Estate, leads the winemaking at Mahi. His philosophy centers on capturing the essence of each vineyard site, employing sustainable practices and traditional techniques. Brian’s approach includes hand-harvesting, indigenous yeast fermentation, and aging in French oak barrels, aiming to produce wines with depth, elegance, and a true sense of place.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The 2022 Twin Valleys Chardonnay is sourced from a small parcel in the Twin Valley Vineyard, located in the Fareham Lane area of Marlborough. Situated at the western end of the Wairau Valley, at the junction with the Waihopai, the vineyard lies on the top terrace. This area features complex soils—a mixture of silt, clay, and stones—that provide both drainage and water retention. Being some distance from the sea, the climate is cooler, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and retain an interesting mineral character.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes were hand-picked on March 17th and 18th, 2022, at 22–22.5 Brix. They were whole-cluster pressed, and the high-solids juice was transferred directly to French barriques for fermentation with indigenous yeast. The wine underwent 15 months of aging in oak barrels, allowing for natural development and integration of flavors.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Mahi Twin Valleys Chardonnay exhibits an array of fruit characters, ranging from citrus through to tropical notes. This is complemented by secondary characters from the natural yeast ferments and barrel aging. The palate has an elegant structure with a creamy, textural mid-palate and a long finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted chicken, grilled seafood, and creamy pasta dishes. Its bright acidity and fruit-forward profile complement rich meats and spicy flavors, while the wine’s subtle complexity enhances the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. With time, the wine may develop additional complexity, showcasing honeyed and nuanced characteristics.
