Winery Background and History

Viña Los Vascos, situated in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Established in 1988, it was the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. The estate spans over 10,000 acres, with 1,581 acres under vine, making it one of the largest vineyards in the central Colchagua Valley. Los Vascos blends Bordeaux winemaking traditions with Chile’s unique terroir, focusing on sustainable practices and producing elegant wines that reflect their origin.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2022 Cromas Gran Reserva Chardonnay is produced by Viña Los Vascos under the guidance of winemaker Philippe Rolet. Rolet emphasizes minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture, ensuring that the wines express the purity of the fruit and the distinctiveness of the terroir. His approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovations to craft wines of exceptional quality and character.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards in Peralillo and Litueche, located in the Colchagua Valley, Chile. The vineyards are situated on medium-deep soils with a loam to clay loam texture. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides a cool climate with significant maritime influence, allowing for slow ripening of the grapes and the development of excellent acidity and aromatic expression. The 2022 vintage experienced early rains and unusually low temperatures, leading to a later harvest on April 14–15.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are harvested very early in the morning to preserve aromatic potential. After destemming and cooling, they undergo an 8-hour maceration before pressing. The must is decanted for 2–3 days and then kept in tanks for 10 days prior to fermentation to develop full aromatic potential and volume. Peralillo grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, while Litueche grapes are fermented in oak barrels and vats. About 10% of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation and is kept on the lees for added complexity.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Cromas Gran Reserva Chardonnay displays a delicate yellow color with golden glints. The nose offers aromas of lime, pineapple, green banana, and white peach, combined with dried fruit notes from barrel aging that contribute to its complexity. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and concentrated, featuring a creamy mouthfeel that leads to an elegant finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled seafood, roasted poultry, and creamy pasta dishes. Its vibrant acidity and supple texture also complement dishes like mushroom risotto, aged cheeses, and rich vegetable gratins. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Chardonnay, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 10–12°C (50–54°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl to concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet and flavors. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, acidity, and oak to shine through with elegance and balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2022 Cromas Gran Reserva Chardonnay is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years.
