Winery Background and History
Viña Los Vascos, located in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Established in 1988, it was the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. The estate spans over 10,000 acres, with 1,581 acres under vine, making it one of the largest vineyards in the central Colchagua Valley. Los Vascos blends Bordeaux winemaking traditions with Chile’s unique terroir, focusing on sustainable practices and producing elegant wines that reflect their origin.
Producer and Winemaker
The Chagual Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is produced by Viña Los Vascos under the guidance of winemaker Philippe Rolet. Rolet emphasizes minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture, ensuring that the wines express the purity of the fruit and the distinctiveness of the terroir. His approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovations to craft wines of exceptional quality and character.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this wine are sourced from organic vineyards in the San Antonio Valley, a coastal region in Chile. The vineyards are situated on granitic soils with good drainage and low nutrient content. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean, approximately 12 miles away, provides a cool climate with significant maritime influence, allowing for slow ripening of the grapes and the development of excellent acidity and aromatic expression. The 2023 vintage experienced a low rainfall winter and a cold spring, leading to a later harvest beginning on April 9.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are harvested at night to maintain low temperatures and preserve aromatic potential. After a few hours of cold maceration, the grapes are pressed and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine is partially aged on lees to enhance roundness and freshness, resulting in a balanced and expressive Sauvignon Blanc.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Chagual Organic Sauvignon Blanc displays a pale color with greenish hues over a slightly yellow background. The nose is marked by notes of exotic fruits such as passion fruit, lychee, and pineapple, complemented by citrus touches of lemon peel and subtle herbal hints of green chili and tomato leaf. On the palate, the wine is juicy with a fresh and herbal aftertaste, reflecting the authenticity of its coastal terroir.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood like oysters and ceviche, grilled white fish, and salads with citrus vinaigrette. Its vibrant acidity and herbal notes also complement goat cheese, asparagus, and dishes featuring green herbs. The wine’s freshness and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this Sauvignon Blanc, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 8–10°C (46–50°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl to concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet and flavors. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, acidity, and herbal notes to shine through with elegance and balance.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2023 Chagual Organic Sauvignon Blanc is crafted for immediate enjoyment. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness for up to 2 years. However, it is recommended to consume it young to fully appreciate its vibrant fruit flavors and lively acidity.
