Winery Background and History
Lions de Batailley is the second wine of Château Batailley, a historic estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France. The château’s history dates back to the 18th century and was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The name “Lions de Batailley” is inspired by the stone lion statues that adorn the entrance of the château, symbolizing strength and heritage. This second wine offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s terroir, crafted from younger vines and specific plots not included in the grand vin.
Producer and Winemaker
Château Batailley is owned by the Castéja family, who have been stewards of the estate since 1924. The winemaking team is dedicated to producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Pauillac terroir. Combining traditional methods with modern techniques, they focus on meticulous vineyard management and precise vinification to ensure the highest quality in both their grand vin and second wine, Lions de Batailley.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards of Château Batailley span approximately 57 hectares, situated on the well-drained gravel soils typical of Pauillac. This composition allows for optimal ripening of the grapes, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that protects against frost and promotes a long growing season. These conditions contribute to the development of wines with depth, complexity, and aging potential.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2019 vintage of Lions de Batailley is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a careful selection process. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve their distinct characteristics. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 16 to 18 months. This aging process imparts subtle oak nuances and enhances the wine’s structure and complexity.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2019 Lions de Batailley has an alcohol content of 14%.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Lions de Batailley offers aromas of currants, berries, and subtle spice notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with finely polished tannins, providing length and elegance. The wine’s approachable nature makes it enjoyable in its youth, yet it possesses the structure to develop further complexity with additional aging.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, grilled lamb, and hearty stews. Its balanced acidity and tannic structure complement rich flavors, making it a versatile choice for diverse cuisines. Additionally, it pairs nicely with aged cheeses and charcuterie.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the 2019 Lions de Batailley at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving can help open up the aromas and soften the tannins. Using large, Bordeaux-style glasses will allow the wine to breathe and express its full aromatic potential.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—consistent temperature around 12°C (54°F), with appropriate humidity and away from direct light—the 2019 Lions de Batailley can be enjoyed now for its vibrant fruit and structure but also has the potential to develop further complexity over the next 5 to 7 years. As it matures, expect the emergence of more nuanced tertiary flavors, adding depth to its profile.
