Winery Background and History
Château Le Puy, located in Saint-Cibard on Bordeaux’s right bank, has been managed by the Amoreau family since 1610. Situated atop a plateau alongside Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, the estate is fully biodynamic and uses no synthetic treatments. It follows lunar rhythms throughout viticulture and winemaking, producing wines that are regionally meaningful and characterful.
Producer and Wine Maker
Jean-Pierre Amoreau and his son Pascal oversee manual harvesting, full destemming, long macerations (2–4 weeks), and use only native yeasts. Fermentation relies on “infusion” without active intervention, then aging occurs for about 24 months in old barrels and foudres. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no sulfur addition before fermentation concludes.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards, averaging about 50 years old, are planted on clay, silex, and limestone soils at approximately 110 m elevation. These terroirs—rich in acidity and unique structure—contribute to the wine’s depth and longevity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Émilien is crafted from approx. 85% Merlot, plus Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Carmenère. After long maceration and fermentation in concrete vats, the wine undergoes two years of aging in foudres and used oak barrels. It is bottled without filtration or fining.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Émilien shows ripe red cherry, blackcurrant, and forest floor on the nose. The palate is mineral-driven, silky, elegant, and precise, with earthy herbs and savory umami notes. It offers excellent energy and balance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with steak tartare, roasted meats like beef or venison, and savoury rustic dishes where its minerality and fine tannins can shine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16‑18 °C in a standard red wine glass to highlight aromas, silky texture, and complexity. Decanting is optional for additional lift.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2021 vintage is best enjoyed between 2025–2032. Its acidity, structure, and depth suggest excellent aging potential.
