Winery Background and History

Château Smith Haut Lafitte, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, France, boasts a rich history dating back to the 14th century. The estate has evolved over the centuries, gaining prominence for its commitment to quality and innovation. In 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard acquired the property, ushering in a new era of excellence. They implemented sustainable viticulture practices and modernized the winemaking facilities, all while preserving the estate’s storied heritage. Le Petit Haut Lafitte, the second wine of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, benefits from the same meticulous care and attention as the Grand Vin, reflecting the estate’s dedication to producing wines of distinction.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the ownership of Daniel and Florence Cathiard, Château Smith Haut Lafitte’s winemaking is overseen by Technical Director Fabien Teitgen. The team emphasizes a harmonious blend of traditional methods and modern innovations, ensuring that each wine expresses the unique terroir of the estate. Their philosophy centers on crafting wines with elegance, complexity, and the capacity for aging, characteristics that are evident in Le Petit Haut Lafitte.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte span approximately 78 hectares, characterized by Günzian gravel soils that provide excellent drainage and reflectivity, aiding in grape ripening. The estate practices organic and biodynamic farming, fostering a balanced ecosystem. The temperate maritime climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, offers mild winters and warm summers, with sufficient rainfall promoting optimal vine health. This unique combination of soil composition and climate contributes to the distinctive profile of Le Petit Haut Lafitte.

Grape Varietals

The 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes for Le Petit Haut Lafitte are hand-harvested and undergo double sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction techniques such as soft punching down to preserve the wine’s finesse. The wine is then aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, crafted in the estate’s own cooperage. This careful aging process allows the wine to develop complexity and integrate oak nuances harmoniously.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of approximately 13.5%.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte presents a fresh bouquet with notes of blackberry, raspberry, tobacco leaf, and star anise. On the palate, it offers a dynamic attack, a solid mid-palate framed by firm tannins, and a long, fresh finish, signatured by the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with roasted or grilled meats, such as lamb or beef, and game dishes. It also complements hearty stews and aged cheeses, enhancing the dining experience with its depth and complexity.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (61°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving can help in expressing its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2017 vintage has demonstrated the ability to age gracefully. Proper cellaring conditions—consistent temperature around 12°C (54°F), with appropriate humidity levels and minimal light exposure—can further preserve its quality. While it is enjoyable now, the wine has the potential to develop additional complexity with further aging.
