Winery Background and History
Le Dix de Los Vascos was introduced in 1998 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) to commemorate their first decade in Chile. Situated in the Colchagua Valley, Viña Los Vascos is one of Chile’s oldest wine estates, with a history dating back to the 18th century. The Rothschild family’s investment aimed to combine Bordeaux winemaking expertise with Chile’s unique terroir, resulting in wines that reflect both tradition and innovation.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Viña Los Vascos is led by Philippe Rolet, who brings extensive experience from both Old and New World wine regions. Rolet emphasizes minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the true expression of the vineyard’s terroir. Under his guidance, the estate focuses on producing wines that are balanced, elegant, and reflective of their origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Le Dix are sourced from the “El Fraile” vineyard, the oldest plot at Los Vascos, with vines averaging 70 years of age. Located in the Colchagua Valley, this vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains provides cooling influences, ensuring a long growing season that allows grapes to develop complexity and balance.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, after which the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. This aging process imparts additional complexity and structure to the wine.
Tasting Notes
Le Dix 2021 exhibits a deep ruby color with garnet highlights. The nose is intense and fruity, featuring notes of black cherry and raspberry, accompanied by cocoa, graphite, and cedar nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with elegant tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The 2021 vintage reflects the nuances of its cool growing season, offering a complex and balanced profile.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as grilled red meats, lamb, and game. Its robust structure and complex flavors also complement aged cheeses and rich stews. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with mushroom-based dishes or lentil casseroles.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its complexity, serve Le Dix 2021 at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for at least 1 hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic potential. Use a Bordeaux-style glass to concentrate its aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Le Dix 2021 is suitable for aging and can be cellared for up to 15 years under proper conditions. Store the wine horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
