La Soufrandiere Saint Veran Cuvee La Combe Desroches 2020
Country: France
Region: Burgundy
Volume: 750ml
Winery Background and History: La Soufrandière is the estate made by the Bret Brothers—Jean‑Philippe, Jean‑Guillaume and Marc‑Antoine—who broke away from the local cooperative in 2000. Based in Vinzelles, Burgundy, they transitioned to organic farming early and gained biodynamic certification in 2006. Their upland, old-vine vineyards and terroir-driven philosophy produce expressive Chardonnay under the Bret Brothers label.
Producer and Wine Maker: The Bret siblings oversee everything from vineyard management to final bottling. Grapes are hand-harvested from parcels acquired in 2016, guided by biodynamic principles. Fermentation takes place in barrel or tank, often using indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphur to preserve freshness and terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate: The La Combe Desroches parcel lies at the foot of Roche de Vergisson, east-facing with clay‑marl soils perfect for Chardonnay. Vines average ~35 years old, benefitting from warm days and cooling nights that deliver juicy fruit with crisp acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods: Grapes are gently pressed and fermented in a mix of older barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Wines rest on fine lees with malolactic fermentation in barrel. Some lots aged briefly in concrete eggs. Sulfur additions kept minimal to highlight purity.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of orchard fruit, white flowers, honeycomb and orange oil lead into a satiny, saline palate. Textured yet lively, the wine finishes with chiselled citrus energy and lingering minerality.
Food & Wine Pairing: Ideal with seafood, shellfish platters, grilled poultry or goat cheeses. Also pairs well with citrus-driven dishes or chicken and turkey.
Service Methods and Temperatures: Serve moderately chilled at 11–13 °C in a classic white Burgundy or tulip glass. No decanting needed; best consumed shortly after opening to preserve aromatics.
Storage and Aging Potential: Best consumed between 2022 and 2028 under cellar conditions of ~12–14 °C and ~70 % humidity. Over time it develops more mineral and honeyed complexity while retaining freshness.
Grape Varietals & percentage used: Chardonnay 100%
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 13 %
