Winery Background and History
Krug was founded in 1843 by Johann‑Joseph Krug in Reims, and stands today as part of LVMH, revered for its craftsmanship and consistency. Each Vintage release celebrates a single year’s character, aged for over a decade in Reims cellars, and the 2004 marks three consecutive vintages honored, a rare achievement .
Producer and Wine Maker
Under the leadership of Cellar Master Julie Cavil and the tasting committee (including Olivier Krug), the Wine of the Year is selected not only for its intensity but for its distinct personality. For 2004, they gave priority to balance and “luminous freshness” over sheer power .
Vineyards and Micro Climate
A blend of approximately 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir, and 24% Pinot Meunier sourced from Grand Cru villages across Champagne. The 2004 season saw a cool start followed by warm, dry late summer and a generous harvest, allowing both concentration and vivacity .
Vinification & Aging Methods
After primary fermentation, the wine remained on fine lees for over 12 years in Krug’s cellars—a hallmark vintage aging that imparts texture, depth, and elegance .
Tasting Notes
Pale gold with a fine mousse. Aromas of lemon meringue, grapefruit interlaced with ginger, brioche, and almond. The palate offers citrus zest, stone fruit, fresh dough, minerals, subtle cashew, and enduring saline freshness .
Food & Wine Pairing
Ideal with oysters, crab, lobster, brassé dishes, truffle-cream poultry, or elegant desserts like lemon tartlets—its precision and minerality elevate refined dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 10–12 °C in a quality Champagne flute or universal wine glass. Chill thoroughly and allow a moment after pouring to reveal full aromatic expression.
Storage and Aging Potential
While already showing maturity, this wine remains fresh and structured. Best enjoyed from now through 2045–2050. Optimal storage: upright in a cool (9–12 °C), stable, dark environment ().
