Winery Background and History
Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug in Reims, Champagne, the House of Krug is one of the region’s most esteemed family-owned Champagne houses. From its inception, Krug has pursued an uncompromising philosophy: to produce the fullest expression of Champagne regardless of annual weather variations. This dedication led to the creation of Grande Cuvée, a multi-vintage masterpiece, showcasing Krug’s mastery of blending and its extensive reserve library .
Producer and Wine Maker
The current Cellar Master, Eric Lebel (since 1998), leads the blending with a team including Olivier Krug. They meticulously taste upwards of 400 wines to craft each Grande Cuvée. Using oak barrel fermentation and strict separation by plot, their goal is complexity, freshness, and identity in every bottle .
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Krug sources grapes from all over Champagne, including Grand Crus and Premiers Crus. While vineyards across Reims, Épernay, and the Montagne de Reims experience varying microclimates, the house avoids homogenizing terroirs—each plot is vinified separately to preserve its character before blending .
Vinification & Aging Methods
Each vintage is fermented in 205-L oak barrels (medium toast), then aged in barrel until December. Krug uses extensive reserve wines—about 42% of the blend—to build depth. Malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve acidity, and after secondary fermentation the wine is aged on lees post-disgorgement to ensure balance and structure .
Tasting Notes
The 171st Édition delivers a fine mousse and generous citrus (grapefruit, orange zest) notes intertwined with almond, brioche and subtle spices. Lively acidity creates crispness, while a mineral, saline finish adds elegance and persistence .
Food & Wine Pairing
As an aperitif, it complements oysters, shrimp, and cured ham like Jabugo. It also stands up to Indian or Moroccan spiced dishes. For dessert, carrot cake or tarte tatin harmonizes with its brioche and citrus notes .
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve well-chilled at 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). Use a tulip or Krug-specific glass to focus aromas and highlight the mousse. Decant only if extremely cold; otherwise pour gently to preserve delicate bubbles.
Storage and Aging Potential
NV Grande Cuvée is built for aging—cellar an additional 5–10 years, ideally up to 20 for older editions. Store upright at 10–12 °C with 70% humidity, away from light and vibration to preserve finesse .
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
Approximately 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Meunier .
