Winery Background and History

Champagne Krug was founded in 1843 by Jean‑Joseph Krug in Reims. As one of the Grandes Marques, it became part of LVMH in 1999. Known for artisanal craftsmanship, Krug ages vintage and single-parcel wines like Clos d’Ambonnay for over a decade in their Reims cellars, reflecting commitment to complexity and terroir expression  .

Producer and Wine Maker

The Clos d’Ambonnay is crafted under the guidance of Cellar Master Julie Cavil and Krug’s tasting committee, including Olivier Krug. It represents meticulous selection from the 0.68 ha walled plot in Ambonnay, focusing on precise expression and balance  .

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Sourced exclusively from a tiny walled monopole in Ambonnay (0.68 ha) planted with Pinot Noir. The terroir features south-east slopes, ancient walls, and Grand Cru village climate marked by cool nights and warm days—ideal for concentrated, elegant fruit expression  .

Vinification & Aging Methods

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the wine undergoes base fermentation and bottle ageing as a blanc de noirs. Aged for over 10 years on lees in Krug’s cellars before disgorgement, enhancing complexity and richness  .

Tasting Notes

Brilliant golden hue, with aromas of candy apple, hazelnut, bitter orange, nougat, and forest mushrooms. The palate is generous and creamy with almond marzipan, citrus zest, red currant, and mineral nuance. The finish remains fresh and vibrant ﹣ highly elegant ﹣ with excellent aging potential  .

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs beautifully with shellfish such as crab, lobster, turbot, grilled calamari, and other seafood. Works equally well with richer dishes—filet mignon in cranberry emulsion, osso buco—or earthy mushroom preparations  .

Service Methods and Temperatures

Best served at 9–12 °C in fine Champagne or Riedel Joseph glassware to reveal its aromatic depth and mousse texture. A brief resting period after chilling is recommended to allow expression  .

Storage and Aging Potential

Already mature and graceful, this bottle shows best from now until about 2040–2050, provided it’s stored upright in a cool, stable environment (9–12 °C) ().
