Winery Background and History

Established in 1996 by Kim and Erica Crawford, Kim Crawford Wines began in a small Auckland cottage, quickly gaining international acclaim for its expressive Sauvignon Blancs. The winery emphasizes sustainable practices, sourcing grapes from diverse sub-regions within Marlborough to capture the area’s unique terroir. Now part of Constellation Brands, Kim Crawford continues to produce wines that reflect New Zealand’s vibrant character.

Producer and Winemaker

Anthony Walkenhorst, the chief winemaker, brings a scientific approach to winemaking, holding degrees in both viticulture and oenology. His meticulous attention to detail ensures each vintage maintains the brand’s signature style—fresh, fruit-forward, and balanced. Walkenhorst’s commitment to innovation and quality has solidified Kim Crawford’s reputation globally.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes are sourced from Marlborough’s Wairau and Awatere Valleys, regions known for their cool, maritime climate and diverse soil types. The significant diurnal temperature variation—warm days and cool nights—enhances flavor development while preserving acidity. This climate, combined with well-draining alluvial soils, contributes to the wine’s intense aromatics and crisp profile.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvested during the cool of night to retain freshness, the grapes undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the varietal’s vibrant aromatics. Post-fermentation, the wine rests on fine lees to enhance mouthfeel and complexity before bottling, without any oak influence, ensuring a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc.

Tasting Notes

Pale straw with green hues, the 2023 vintage offers lifted aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, and crushed herbs. The palate is fresh and juicy, featuring ripe passion fruit, melon, and stone fruit flavors. Vibrant acidity provides structure, leading to a long, zesty finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Sauvignon Blanc pairs excellently with seafood dishes like fresh oysters, grilled shrimp, and lobster. Its crisp acidity complements salads, goat cheese, and dishes featuring asparagus or green herbs. It’s also a refreshing accompaniment to light poultry dishes and Asian-inspired cuisine.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a white wine glass to highlight its aromatic intensity and crispness. No decanting is necessary. Consume within a few hours of opening to enjoy its freshness, though it can remain vibrant for up to two days if refrigerated and sealed properly.

Storage and Aging Potential

Designed for immediate enjoyment, this wine is best consumed within 1–2 years of the vintage to appreciate its fresh fruit character. Store bottles in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature. While not intended for long-term aging, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
