Winery Background and History

Founded in 1996 by Kim and Erica Crawford, Kim Crawford Wines quickly gained international acclaim for its expressive and approachable wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc. The winery emphasizes sustainable practices and sources grapes from diverse sub-regions within New Zealand to capture the area’s unique terroir. Now part of Constellation Brands, Kim Crawford continues to produce wines that reflect New Zealand’s vibrant character.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Kim Crawford is dedicated to crafting wines that are both accessible and expressive of New Zealand’s terroir. By selecting grapes from diverse vineyards, they achieve a balance of flavors and textures. The team’s approach combines modern winemaking techniques with a respect for traditional practices, resulting in wines that are both contemporary and rooted in New Zealand winemaking heritage.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for this Chardonnay are sourced from Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand’s oldest wine region, known for its warm climate and diverse soil types. The region’s long, hot summers and cool nights provide ideal conditions for ripening Chardonnay grapes, resulting in wines with rich fruit flavors and balanced acidity. The varied soils, including gravel, clay, and limestone, contribute to the complexity and minerality of the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvested during the cool of night to retain freshness, the grapes undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the varietal’s vibrant aromatics. Post-fermentation, the wine rests on fine lees to enhance mouthfeel and complexity before bottling, without any oak influence, ensuring a pure expression of Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

This Chardonnay presents a medium straw color. The nose offers lifted aromas of citrus and stone fruit with notes of tropical fruit and pineapple. On the palate, it is approachable and full-bodied, displaying great length and persistence. The wine has a medium weight with a creamy texture and hints of butterscotch and lemon meringue pie.

Food & Wine Pairing

An excellent companion to creamy cheeses like Camembert, this Chardonnay also pairs well with pan-seared salmon and white meat dishes. Its rich fruit flavors and creamy texture complement dishes with similar profiles, making it versatile for various cuisines.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this wine chilled at a temperature of 8–10°C (46–50°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balanced palate. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its flavors. Use standard white wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential

Designed for early enjoyment, this wine is best consumed within 1–2 years of the vintage to appreciate its fresh fruit character. Store bottles in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature. While not intended for long-term aging, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
