Producer and Winemaker
The 2020 Killerman’s Run GSM was crafted under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Peter Warr and Winemaker Kirby Graudins. Their collaborative approach emphasizes minimal intervention and precise vinification to highlight the distinct characteristics of each varietal. Their dedication ensures that the wine reflects the purity and intensity of fruit, balanced with structure and elegance.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this blend are sourced from premium vineyards across the Clare Valley, a region known for its diverse soils and microclimates. The 2019/2020 growing season was marked by a second consecutive dry year and higher-than-average temperatures, leading to yields being down by as much as 30%. However, the new year brought milder temperatures, providing ideal ripening conditions for flavor development and acid retention.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Each varietal component was vinified separately to preserve its unique characteristics. Post-fermentation, the wine matured for 15 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads, imparting softness and elegance to the silky palate. The final assemblage was bottled unfined and unfiltered to further complement the wine’s textural and engaging style.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Killerman’s Run GSM exhibits a deep crimson red color. The nose is elevated and brimming with dark fruits, redolent red berries, light oaky char, sweet spice, and dried herbs. On the palate, dark cherries and sweet spice from the Grenache are complemented by full-bodied plum and chocolate notes from the Shiraz. These flavors are seamlessly intertwined with cured meats and dried herbs from the Mataro, further enhanced by firm tannins and subtle charry French oak nuances.
Food & Wine Pairing
This GSM blend pairs well with a variety of dishes, including barbecued lamb or pork chops with a smoky sauce, kebabs, thin-based pizzas, well-seasoned pasta dishes, earthy vegetarian cuisine, and aged hard cheeses. Its robust structure and fruit-forward profile complement both meat-based and hearty vegetarian dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the 2020 Killerman’s Run GSM at a temperature of 16°C to 17°C (60°F to 63°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting the wine for about 25-30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet and enhance its flavors. Using large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2020 vintage can be enjoyed now or over the next several years. With proper cellaring, it has the potential to develop additional complexity and depth, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
