Winery Background and History
Founded in 2011 by Wang Fang, affectionately known as “Crazy Fang,” Kanaan Winery is located in the Helan Mountain East Foothills of Ningxia, China. Drawing inspiration from her time in Germany, Fang aimed to showcase Ningxia’s potential for producing high-quality wines. Despite the region’s harsh winters necessitating vine burial, Kanaan has gained international acclaim for its meticulous vineyard management and innovative winemaking techniques, particularly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling.
Producer and Winemaker
Wang Fang, a Chinese-German vintner, leads Kanaan Winery with a vision to elevate Chinese wines on the global stage. Her hands-on approach and dedication to quality have been instrumental in the winery’s success. Collaborating with a team of skilled winemakers, Fang focuses on expressing the unique terroir of Ningxia through sustainable practices and precise vinification methods.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for the Semi-Sweet White Wine are sourced from vineyards situated at approximately 1,200 meters elevation in Ningxia’s Helan Mountain East Foothills. The region’s sandy soils with gravel layers provide excellent drainage, while the significant diurnal temperature variation enhances flavor development and preserves acidity. The 2023 vintage benefited from favorable weather conditions, contributing to the wine’s balanced structure and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2023 Semi-Sweet White Wine is a blend of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes were hand-harvested and underwent cold maceration to extract aromatic compounds. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the varietal characteristics. The wine was then filtered and bottled without oak aging, maintaining its fresh and vibrant profile.
Tasting Notes
This semi-sweet white wine presents a pale straw color with greenish hues. The nose is filled with aromas of peach and pineapple, indicative of the Riesling and Chardonnay components. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, with flavors of tropical fruits and a crisp finish. The wine’s refreshing character makes it an approachable choice for various occasions.
Food & Wine Pairing
The Semi-Sweet White Wine pairs well with spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai green curry or Szechuan dishes, where its sweetness balances the heat. It also complements seafood dishes like grilled shrimp or scallops, and soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. For a regional pairing, consider serving it alongside Chinese-style braised pork or duck, where the wine’s acidity and sweetness enhance the savory flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve this wine chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balanced palate. No decanting is necessary; simply pour into white wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience. Avoid serving too cold, which can mute the nuances, or too warm, which may over-accentuate the sweetness.
Storage and Aging Potential
This semi-sweet white wine is best enjoyed within 2 to 3 years of the vintage to appreciate its fresh and vibrant character. Under optimal storage conditions—cool (12–15°C), dark, with 70% humidity—the wine will maintain its quality and may develop additional complexity over time. Store bottles horizontally to keep the cork moist.
