Winery Background and History

Josef Chromy Wines, established in 2007 by Czech-Australian Josef Chromy, is located in Relbia, near Launceston in northern Tasmania. Chromy, a significant figure in Tasmania’s wine industry, previously contributed to the development of notable wineries such as Jansz, Tamar Ridge, and Heemskerk. His namesake winery quickly gained recognition for producing premium cool-climate wines, particularly sparkling varieties. The estate emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, aiming to showcase the unique terroir of Tasmania.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Josef Chromy Wines is led by Ockie Myburgh, who brings a wealth of experience from various wine regions, including South Africa, Germany’s Mosel, and several Australian regions like the Clare Valley and Hunter Valley. Myburgh’s approach focuses on crafting wines that reflect the purity and elegance of Tasmania’s cool-climate fruit, utilizing traditional methods to produce sparkling wines with finesse and complexity.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The estate vineyard is situated in Relbia, within the Tamar Valley of northern Tasmania. The vineyard benefits from a cool maritime climate, with moderate temperatures and a long growing season, ideal for producing high-quality sparkling wine grapes. The soils are predominantly rich alkaline clay with stony compositions over an ancient dolerite base, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the mineral complexity of the wines. The vineyard’s elevation ranges from 81 to 170 meters above sea level, offering varied microclimates that enhance grape character.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The Josef Chromy Tasmanian Cuvée NV is crafted using the traditional method (méthode traditionnelle). The blend comprises 58% Pinot Noir, 41.5% Chardonnay, and 0.5% Pinot Meunier. After primary fermentation, the wine undergoes tirage without malolactic fermentation and is aged on lees for 18 months before disgorgement. A dosage of 9 g/L is added to balance acidity and enhance mouthfeel, resulting in a sparkling wine that combines freshness with depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

This sparkling wine exhibits a pale straw color with a lively, fine bead. The nose offers expressive aromas of crisp Granny Smith apple and citrus, complemented by subtle notes of toasted biscuit. On the palate, it is vibrant and fresh, featuring flavors of green apple and lemon, with hints of brioche adding richness. The wine’s fine creamy texture and delicate aldehydic layering contribute to its complexity and elegance, making it a refined example of Tasmanian sparkling wine.

Food & Wine Pairing

The Josef Chromy Tasmanian Cuvée NV pairs excellently with a variety of dishes. Its crisp acidity and fine bubbles make it an ideal match for fresh oysters, shellfish, and sushi. The wine’s subtle richness complements creamy cheeses like Brie and Camembert, as well as light poultry dishes and appetizers. Its versatility also allows it to serve as an elegant aperitif, setting the tone for a sophisticated dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate this sparkling wine’s nuances, serve it well-chilled at a temperature of 6–8°C (43–46°F). Use a tulip-shaped sparkling wine glass to concentrate the aromas and showcase the fine bead. While the wine is ready to drink upon release, allowing it to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can help reveal its aromatic complexity and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store the bottle horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F) and moderate humidity. While the Josef Chromy Tasmanian Cuvée NV is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it possesses the structure and acidity to age gracefully for up to 3–5 years. Over time, the wine may develop additional toasty and nutty characteristics, adding to its complexity.
