J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spatlese Trocken Alte Reben 2020
Country: Germany
Region: Rheingau
Volume: 750ml
Winery Background and History:
J.B. Becker is a multigenerational, family-owned estate in Walluf, Rheingau, with viticultural roots extending into the 1870s. Under Hans-Joseph Becker (HaJo), the estate championed organic and minimal-intervention viticulture. Known for powerful, terroir-driven Rieslings, Becker repeatedly delivers elegant, age-worthy dry white wines that showcase precision and Saar-like minerality
Producer and Wine Maker:
HaJo Becker personally oversees everything—from vineyard to bottle. Grapes from old-vine Walkenberg blocks are hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented with native yeasts in inert stainless-pressurized tanks. The wine undergoes extended maturation (approximately 24 months) in large traditional oak barrels, then is bottled under screw cap to retain clarity and structure ()
Vineyards and Micro Climate:
The wine comes from the steep, south-facing Walkenberg vineyard, composed of slate-rich soils that promote drainage and concentration. The 2020 season delivered a harmonious vintage with ripe fruit balanced by brisk acidity—ideal conditions for late-harvest Riesling
Vinification & Aging Methods:
Meticulously hand-picked and gently pressed, the wine is fermented dry in pressurized stainless-steel tanks. It matures for nearly two years in large old oak barrels before bottling under screw cap to preserve its crystalline purity ()
Tasting Notes:
Pale straw color with crystalline clarity. The nose reveals salt-tinged minerality layered with white peach, tangerine, and sea spray. On the palate, the wine is energetic and suave, off-dry with about 5 g residual sugar, vibrant acidity, oceanic salinity, and a long, focused finish
Food & Wine Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with grilled shrimp, sea bass, sushi, shellfish, soft cheeses, roasted pork, lightly spiced Asian dishes, and creamy vegetable preparations. Its crisp acid and saline texture balance richer flavors
Service Methods and Temperatures:
Serve chilled at 8–10 °C in a medium-stemmed white wine glass. No decanting required to enjoy its refreshing character
Storage and Aging Potential:
With proper cellaring (10–12 °C, moderate humidity), this Spätlese can age gracefully for 10–15 years. Over time, it will develop complementary petrol, honey, and deep mineral notes, while preserving lively acidity
