J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2020
Country: Germany
Region: Rheingau
Volume: 750ml
Winery Background and History:
J.B. Becker is a family-owned Rheingau estate rooted in Walluf since the 1870s, revitalized by Hans-Joseph “HaJo” Becker from the 1970s. A staunch pioneer of organic, minimal-intervention methods, the winery produces powerful, terroir-led Rieslings known for clarity, elegance, and long aging potential .
Producer and Wine Maker:
HaJo Becker himself oversees all stages of production. Grapes are hand-harvested from old Walkenberg vines, gently pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast in pressurized stainless steel, matured on fine lees in large oak barrels for about 24 months, and bottled under screw cap to preserve purity and precision ().
Vineyards and Micro Climate:
The Walkenberg vineyard comprises steep, south-facing, slate-rich slopes in Walluf. The 2020 growing season was balanced, offering ripe fruit and cool acidity—ideal for crafting a vibrant, structured Kabinett .
Vinification & Aging Methods:
Prodigious hand picking is followed by gentle pressing and fermenting to dry (“Trocken”) in stainless steel. Aging occurs for nearly two years in large old oak casks before bottling under screw cap to maintain freshness and clarity ().
Tasting Notes:
Pale straw with crystalline clarity. Aromas include citrus (lemon, white peach), saline minerality, and floral perfume. The palate is dry, energetic, sleek, with vibrant acidity, a touch of residual fruit, and a long, mineral-driven finish .
Food & Wine Pairing:
Perfect with shellfish, white fish, sushi, light curries, spring vegetables, poultry, and mild cheeses. Its crisp acidity and refined texture balance delicate flavors beautifully.
Service Methods and Temperatures:
Serve chilled at 8–10 °C in a medium-stem white wine glass. No decanting is needed to preserve its freshness and tension.
Storage and Aging Potential:
This Kabinett can mature gracefully over 10–15 years under proper cellaring (10–12 °C, moderate humidity). With age it will develop petrol and honeyed notes while retaining lively acidity .
