Winery Background and History
IDDA is a collaborative project between renowned Piedmontese winemaker Angelo Gaja and Sicilian vintner Alberto Graci, established in 2017. The name “IDDA,” meaning “she” in Sicilian dialect, refers to Mount Etna, the majestic and active volcano that dominates the region. The partnership aims to produce wines that capture the unique terroir of Etna, combining Gaja’s expertise in crafting elegant, age-worthy wines with Graci’s deep understanding of the local landscape and grape varieties.
Producer and Winemaker
Angelo Gaja, a legendary figure in Italian winemaking, brings decades of experience and innovation to the IDDA project. Alberto Graci, a native of Sicily, has been instrumental in revitalizing Etna’s winemaking traditions. Together, they oversee the viticulture and winemaking processes, ensuring that each bottle of IDDA Etna Rosso reflects the harmony between modern techniques and the region’s rich heritage.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards are located on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, at elevations ranging from 600 to 800 meters above sea level. This high-altitude setting provides a unique microclimate characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the development of complex aromas and flavors in the grapes. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals, impart a distinctive minerality to the wines, while the diverse exposures and altitudes allow for a nuanced expression of the Nerello Mascalese grape.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in a combination of oak and concrete vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged for approximately 18 months in a mix of large oak casks and concrete tanks. This aging process enhances the wine’s structure and complexity while maintaining its vibrant fruit character and mineral backbone.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 IDDA Etna Rosso exhibits a bright ruby color with aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and floral notes, complemented by hints of Mediterranean herbs and volcanic ash. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, showcasing flavors of ripe red fruits, subtle spice, and a pronounced minerality. The tannins are well-integrated, leading to a long, elegant finish that reflects the wine’s volcanic origins.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, roasted poultry, and hearty pasta dishes. Its bright acidity and mineral notes complement tomato-based sauces, while its refined tannins make it a suitable match for aged cheeses and charcuterie. The wine’s versatility allows it to enhance both traditional Sicilian cuisine and a wide range of Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine at 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine’s bouquet and enhance its flavors. This allows the wine to express its full character and provides an optimal tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2021 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 8 to 10 years. With time, the wine may develop additional complexity, showcasing earthy and nuanced characteristics that reflect its volcanic terroir.
