Winery Background and History
Founded in 1856, Weingut Hiedler is a family-run estate located in Langenlois, the heart of Austria’s Kamptal region. Now managed by the fifth generation, brothers Ludwig Jr. and Dietmar Hiedler, the winery is renowned for its commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The estate’s philosophy emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through.
Producer and Winemaker
Ludwig Hiedler Jr. and Dietmar Hiedler oversee both vineyard management and winemaking at Weingut Hiedler. Their approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques, focusing on expressing the purity and complexity of their wines. By allowing natural fermentation and extended lees contact, they craft wines that are both expressive and age-worthy, showcasing the distinctive qualities of Kamptal’s terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Riesling Langenlois Urgestein 2022 is sourced from terraced vineyards northwest of Langenlois, characterized by metamorphic and crystalline rock soils known as “Urgestein.” These ancient soils, combined with the region’s continental climate and significant diurnal temperature variations, contribute to the wine’s vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality. The vineyards’ elevation and exposure ensure optimal ripening conditions for Riesling.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested in early October, destemmed, and gently pressed without sulfur addition. Fermentation occurred with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by over six months of aging on the lees. This process enhances the wine’s texture and complexity while preserving its fresh fruit character. The wine was bottled under screw cap to maintain its purity and freshness.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Riesling Langenlois Urgestein exhibits aromas of ripe peach and apricot, intertwined with stony minerality. On the palate, it is harmonious and immediately attractive, with juicy stone fruit flavors and a subtle pithy tannin finish that underscores its ripe fruit and mineral core. The wine’s elegance and balance make it both approachable and complex.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Riesling pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including shellfish, grilled fish, and poultry. Its crisp acidity and mineral notes complement Asian cuisine, particularly dishes featuring lemongrass or ginger. Additionally, it serves as a delightful accompaniment to fresh salads, goat cheese, and light appetizers, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage is best enjoyed within 5 to 7 years of release to capture its vibrant freshness and aromatic intensity. While it can be consumed immediately, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
