Winery Background and History

Weingut Hiedler, located in Langenlois within Austria’s Kamptal region, is a family-run estate with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1856. Currently managed by Ludwig Hiedler and his sons, the winery is renowned for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. Hiedler’s philosophy emphasizes expressing the unique terroir of their vineyards, particularly through Austria’s flagship white grape, Grüner Veltliner.

Producer and Winemaker

The Hiedler family, with Ludwig Hiedler at the helm, oversees both vineyard management and winemaking. Their approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques to produce wines that reflect the character of their origin. The family’s dedication to quality and authenticity has positioned Weingut Hiedler as a respected name in Austrian winemaking.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Ried Thal vineyard is situated in the southern part of Langenlois and features gently sloping terraces with sandy and chalky loess soils over mineral-rich red sand and gravel. This composition contributes to the wine’s minerality and complexity. The region’s continental climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, allows for optimal ripening while preserving acidity, resulting in wines with freshness and depth.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes from Ried Thal are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks to maintain purity of fruit. The wine is then aged on fine lees, enhancing texture and complexity. This method preserves the varietal’s characteristic freshness and allows the expression of the vineyard’s unique terroir.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Ried Thal presents a bright yellow-gold hue with silver reflections. Aromas of delicate orange zest, yellow apple, and fine blossom honey lead to a juicy and complex palate. Fresh acidity balances flavors of white apple fruit and lime, culminating in a salty and youthful finish. This wine showcases finesse and has good aging potential.

Food & Wine Pairing

This versatile Grüner Veltliner pairs well with a variety of dishes, including shellfish, crab, lobster, and lean fish. Its crisp acidity and mineral notes complement vegetarian dishes and mild cheeses, making it an excellent choice for diverse culinary pairings. The wine’s structure and freshness enhance flavors without overpowering delicate ingredients.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years, developing additional complexity and nuanced characteristics.
