Winery Background and History
Hentley Farm, established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Hentschke, is a boutique single-estate winery located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. The estate is renowned for its premium Shiraz wines, crafted from carefully selected vineyard sites that showcase the region’s diverse terroir. Hentley Farm’s commitment to minimal intervention winemaking and sustainable viticulture has earned it a reputation for producing wines of exceptional quality and character.
Producer and Winemaker
The wines of Hentley Farm are crafted under the guidance of winemaker Andrew Quin. With a philosophy centered on expressing the unique characteristics of each vineyard block, Quin employs traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern practices to create wines that are both expressive and elegant. His meticulous approach ensures that each wine reflects the distinct personality of its origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Beauty Shiraz is sourced from the coolest block on the Hentley Farm estate, situated at the lowest point near Greenock Creek. This location benefits from a western aspect, shaded mornings, and the presence of large gum trees, resulting in cooler air temperatures that persist into the morning. These conditions contribute to the wine’s lifted aromatics and refined structure.
Vinification & Aging Methods
In 2015, the Shiraz grapes were co-fermented with 3% Viognier skins, destemmed, and transferred to fermentation vessels. A combination of inoculated and natural yeast strains facilitated fermentation. One-third of the wine underwent fermentation off skins in oak, while the remainder was chilled and returned over the skins with minimal pump-overs. The wine was basket pressed and matured for 16 months in French oak barrels, 35% of which were new. No fining or filtration was employed in the production process.
Tasting Notes
The 2015 vintage presents a vivid crimson-purple hue. Aromas of cherry cola, sweet spice, and dusty oak emerge with aeration. On the palate, the wine is rich and powerful, featuring juicy blackberry and satsuma plum flavors complemented by vibrant acidity and integrated tannins. Herbal and medicinal notes add complexity, leading to a long, expressive finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This elegant Shiraz pairs well with dishes such as grilled lamb chops, beef tenderloin, or roasted duck. Its vibrant acidity and complex flavor profile also complement hearty vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or eggplant parmigiana.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses to enhance its aromatic complexity. Decanting for an hour is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and reveal its full bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2015 vintage has shown remarkable aging potential, with optimal drinking from 2019 to 2032. Proper cellaring will allow the wine to develop further complexity and soften its tannins over time.
