Winery Background and History

Henri Giraud is a historic, family-owned Champagne house in Aÿ, founded in the 17th century. Its wines are acclaimed for biodynamic viticulture and artisanal barrel fermentation using oak from the Argonne forest. The Fût de Chêne MV line embodies their terroir-driven ethos, blending Grand Cru base wines with a perpetual solera reserve dating back to 1990.

Producer and Wine Maker

Under Claude Giraud’s guidance and cellar‑master Frédéric Mestelan, MV18 comprises approximately 67–70% Pinot Noir and 20–30% Chardonnay, mostly from the 2018 vintage, complemented by older reserve wines (1990–2017/2020). Around 50% of the base wine is fermented in Argonne oak barrels (including a significant proportion of new oak), then aged on lees approximately 6 years in bottle before final release.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

All fruit is sourced from Aÿ Grand Cru—chalk-rich, southeast‑facing slopes moderated by the Marne River. The cool continental climate promotes slow ripening, vibrant acidity, and concentrated fruit, further enhanced by biodynamic farming.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The wine undergoes 12 months of barrel aging (some new oak) followed by 6 years on lees en tirage. This extended ageing in oak and bottle contributes to its creamy texture, depth, and balance. Dosage is low (Extra-Brut / Brut).

Tasting Notes

A pale golden hue with persistent mousse. The nose reveals apricot, peach, tangerine peel, pastry, spice, hazelnut, honey, and chalky minerality. The palate is medium-full, creamy, saline, with citrus, brioche, almond, and a seductive, long finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Ideal with shellfish (scallops, crab risotto), seafood in creamy sauces, truffle risotto, mild chèvre, and buttery fish. Its texture, salinity, and complexity make it versatile for rich and refined dishes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve well-chilled at 8–10 °C in quality tulip or white-wine glass. No need for decanting. Allow 30 minutes breathing for fuller expression. ()

Storage and Aging Potential

Ready now, MV18 offers aging potential through 2032 when cellared at 12–14 °C with stable humidity. Larger formats may extend longevity further.

Grape Varietals & percentage used

Approximately 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
