Winery Background and History
The Hofkellerei des Fürsten von Liechtenstein (also known simply as Liechtenstein Winery) is one of Austria’s historic estates, owned by the Princely House since 1436. Located in Lower Austria, its vineyards have long been respected for quality and tradition. The Reserve series highlights their dedication to expressing varietal purity and terroir, producing wines that combine heritage with modern wine-making finesse.
Producer and Wine Maker
This Grüner Veltliner Reserve is crafted at their Wilfersdorf facility. The winemaking team sources mature vines (many about 35-40 years old) from prime parcels. They use delicate handling in the cellar, low temperatures during fermentation, and cautious winemaking practices to preserve the grape’s tartness, aromatic lift, and natural minerality.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The fruit for the 2022 Reserve comes from vineyards in Niederösterreich, especially from the Karlsberg / Wilfersdorf area in Weinviertel. The micro climate includes warm days, cool nights, with loess and fertile soils. The age of vines and cooler night temperatures help build structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel to maintain purity and freshness. After fermentation, there is a period of lees contact which adds texture and depth. There may also be partial maturation in large neutral vessels (or older oak) to round the wine without imposing strong oak character.
Tasting Notes
Pale yellow-green color with shimmering tones. Aromas present include green apple, white peach, exotic spice (white pepper), citrus peel, and herbs. The palate is lively and vibrant: crisp acidity, fresh orchard fruit, some stone fruit, a touch of citrus, clean mineral finish, and a subtle salinity. Elegant texture, with a spicy backbone.
Food & Wine Pairing
Pairs superbly with Austrian cuisine like schnitzel, pork, and lighter game. Also excellent with shellfish, crab, lobster, fresh vegetables, salads with citrus dressings, and Asian cuisine, especially dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or fresh herbs. Equally good with soft cheeses or goat cheese.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve chilled, around 8-10 °C. Use a medium-sized white wine glass or perhaps one mid-sized to concentrate aromas. Let the wine breathe a few minutes after opening; slight aeration can soften edges. Ideal to pour and allow slight chilling after opening if needed.
Storage and Aging Potential
While drinkable upon release, this wine has potential to age gracefully for about 4-7 years. With proper storage (cool, stable temperature around 10-12 °C, no strong humidity fluctuations, dark), it can develop more mineral and tertiary notes over time while retaining its freshness.
