Winery Background and History

Frescobaldi’s Montesodi represents one of the first single-vineyard (“Cru”) expressions in Chianti Rufina, created in 1974 at the renowned Castello Nipozzano estate. Situated on the stony “Montesodi” plot, this Riserva epitomizes elegance, reflecting both terroir clarity and decades of winemaking heritage.

Producer and Wine Maker

Meticulously crafted by Frescobaldi’s expert team, Montesodi 2021 undergoes rigorous vine tending and berry-by-berry selection. Rigorous sorting at harvest ensures only top-quality fruit forms the foundation of this refined Sangiovese.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Located at approximately 400 m elevation, the Montesodi vineyard sits on exceptionally well-drained schist soils with southwest exposure—ensuring balanced growth and ripening under significant diurnal variation, integral to the wine’s structure and vibrancy.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Hand-harvested grapes undergo standard alcoholic fermentation and immediate malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for 18 months in large Austrian and French oak barrels (30 hL), followed by additional bottle aging before release.

Tasting Notes

This vintage pours a vibrant ruby-red. Aromas convey strawberry plant, currant, blood orange, pepper, clove, and menthol—all signature expressions of its terroir. On the palate, it offers bright freshness and silken tannins, delivering elegant harmony and a long, refined finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs beautifully with lamb, game, hearty Tuscan ragù, cured meats, and aged cheeses—its elegance and savory structure elevate rustic fare.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at** 16–18 °C** in a standard red wine glass. A 30-minute to 1-hour decant is recommended for optimal flavor and texture expression.  (inferred based on style and aging)
