Winery Background and History

Established in 1815, Fonseca is a prestigious Port house in Portugal’s Douro Valley. Renowned for its commitment to quality, Fonseca has consistently produced exceptional Ports that reflect the rich heritage of the region. The house is particularly noted for its vintage Ports, which are celebrated for their depth and longevity. Fonseca’s dedication to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques has solidified its reputation as a leader in the Port industry.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Fonseca is led by David Guimaraens, a sixth-generation winemaker whose family has been associated with the company since its inception. David’s expertise and passion for Port wine are evident in the meticulous crafting of each blend. He oversees the entire production process, from vineyard management to final bottling, ensuring that each wine upholds Fonseca’s high standards. His approach combines traditional methods with modern innovations, resulting in Ports that are both classic and contemporary.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for Fonseca’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port are sourced from prime vineyards in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior sub-regions of the Douro Valley. These areas are characterized by steep, terraced vineyards, schist soils, and a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cold winters. The combination of these factors contributes to the development of grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity. The vineyards are managed with sustainable practices to preserve the unique terroir and ensure the health of the vines.

Vinification & Aging Methods

After harvesting, the grapes are fermented with the addition of grape spirit to halt fermentation and preserve natural sugars. The wine is then aged in small oak casks, typically holding about 630 liters, for an average of 20 years. This prolonged aging process allows the wine to develop its characteristic tawny color and complex flavors, including notes of dried fruit, nuts, and spice. Regular racking and blending ensure consistency and balance in the final product.

Tasting Notes

Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port displays a deep amber hue with russet highlights. The nose is rich and complex, offering aromas of ripe, plummy fruit, warm spicy overtones of cinnamon and butterscotch, and subtle oak nuances. On the palate, it is smooth and silky, with flavors of dried berries, plum compote, and a hint of spice. The wine’s balanced acidity and gentle tannins lead to a long, elegant finish with a touch of sweetness.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Tawny Port pairs beautifully with a variety of desserts, particularly those featuring nuts, berries, or dark chocolate. It complements dishes like almond tart, berry compote, or chocolate mousse. The wine also pairs well with blue cheeses, such as Stilton or Roquefort, and can be enjoyed with roasted nuts or dried fruits for a simple yet satisfying combination.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port is best served slightly chilled, at a temperature of 12–16°C (54–61°F). This enhances its aromatic profile and balances its sweetness. The wine does not require decanting and is ready to drink upon opening. Use a Port or dessert wine glass to concentrate the aromas and allow the flavors to fully express themselves.

Storage and Aging Potential

This Tawny Port is bottled for immediate consumption and does not benefit from further aging in the bottle. Once opened, it can be enjoyed over several weeks if stored properly. Keep the bottle upright in a cool, dark place, and ensure the cork is securely replaced after each use. Refrigeration can help preserve the wine’s freshness over time.
