Winery Background and History
Established in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is a family-owned estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy. Over seven generations, the Faiveley family has expanded their holdings to include some of Burgundy’s most prestigious vineyards. Known for combining tradition with innovation, the estate emphasizes meticulous vineyard management and precise winemaking techniques to express the unique terroirs of their diverse holdings.
Producer and Wine Maker
Under the leadership of Erwan Faiveley, who took over in 2005, the domaine has seen significant modernization. Erwan, alongside technical director Jérôme Flous, has focused on refining the estate’s style, balancing power with elegance. Their collaborative approach ensures that each wine reflects its origin while maintaining the house’s signature depth and structure.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The “Les Referts” vineyard is situated at the bottom of the village of Puligny-Montrachet, bordering Meursault. Domaine Faiveley’s parcel covers 0.37 hectares within this 5-hectare climat. The compact, marl-rich soils impart pronounced minerality and tension to the wine. The vineyard’s location and soil composition contribute to the wine’s authenticity and depth.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted meticulously. Fermentation occurs over four weeks in French oak barrels, with 40–50% new oak, in cellars maintained at consistent natural temperatures and humidity. The wine undergoes regular stirring during its 17–18 months of aging, enhancing its complexity and texture.
Tasting notes
The 2022 Les Referts offers a subtle and captivating nose, combining citrus and exotic fruit aromas with light toasty notes. On the palate, it reveals a sweet taste of fresh almonds, balanced by a subtle mineral tension. The wine is distinguished by its elegance and long-lasting aromatic persistence.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Premier Cru pairs excellently with shellfish, rich fish dishes like salmon or tuna, and creamy pasta. Its structure and minerality also complement mild and soft cheeses, enhancing the dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 12°C to 14°C (54°F to 57°F). Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its aromatic complexity. Use medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its bouquet and texture.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 8 to 12 years, developing greater complexity and depth with time.
