Winery Background and History
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s most esteemed family-owned estates, now led by Erwan Faiveley, the seventh generation. Over nearly two centuries, the domaine has expanded its holdings across Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise, emphasizing Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. Faiveley is renowned for its commitment to traditional winemaking, meticulous vineyard management, and producing wines that reflect the unique terroirs of Burgundy.
Producer and Winemaker
Erwan Faiveley, at the helm since 2005, has modernized the estate while honoring its traditions. He collaborates with Technical Director Jérôme Flous, who oversees vineyard practices and vinification. Their approach combines sustainable viticulture with precise winemaking techniques, aiming to express the purity and complexity of each vineyard site.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard is located in Gevrey-Chambertin, within the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. Domaine Faiveley’s parcel lies on clay-rich brown soils interspersed with lava and iron ore deposits, contributing to the wine’s opulence and aromatic finesse. The stony soil ensures balance and supports the wine’s aging potential. The vineyard’s proximity to Chambertin and its position just off the Route des Grands Crus make it an exceptional Grand Cru site.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation. The wine undergoes fermentation in wooden vats, followed by aging for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with 60% new oak and 40% once-used barrels. This aging process occurs in Faiveley’s cellars, maintained at consistent natural humidity and temperature, allowing the wine to develop complexity and structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru displays a deep ruby red hue. The nose reveals a rich bouquet of small red fruits, spices, and floral notes. On the palate, it offers a harmonious blend of ripe raspberries, juicy strawberries, and black cherries, intertwined with hints of vanilla, clove, and a touch of smoky oak. The wine’s vibrant acidity is balanced by silky tannins, creating a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel, culminating in a long, elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Grand Cru pairs excellently with rich dishes such as roasted duck, game meats, and beef Wellington. Its robust structure and intricate flavors also complement earthy mushroom risottos and aged cheeses like Comté or Époisses, enhancing the dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 14°C to 16°C (57°F to 61°F). Decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its aromatic complexity. Use large Burgundy glasses to fully appreciate its bouquet and texture.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15 to 25 years, developing greater complexity and depth with time.
