Winery Background and History
Established in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is a family-owned estate that has spanned seven generations. With over 120 hectares of vineyards across Burgundy, including prestigious Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, the domaine is renowned for producing wines that reflect the purity and elegance of their terroirs. Under the leadership of Erwan Faiveley since 2005, the estate has embraced sustainable viticulture and modernized winemaking techniques, enhancing the quality and reputation of its wines.
Producer and Winemaker
Erwan Faiveley, representing the seventh generation of the Faiveley family, has been instrumental in elevating the estate’s stature. Collaborating with Technical Director Jérôme Flous, the team emphasizes precision in both vineyard management and winemaking. Their approach focuses on minimal intervention, allowing each wine to express its unique origin. The duo’s dedication to quality and innovation ensures that Domaine Faiveley’s wines consistently showcase elegance, depth, and a true sense of place.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The “Aux Beaux Bruns” Premier Cru vineyard is situated in the northern part of Chambolle-Musigny, adjacent to the “Les Groseilles” climat. This site benefits from an east/southeast exposure and pebbly soils, which contribute to the wine’s finesse and aromatic complexity. The vineyard’s microclimate, characterized by cool nights and warm days, allows for a slow ripening process, preserving acidity and enhancing the expression of Pinot Noir.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak to enhance complexity. The wine is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 40-50% of which are new, with the remainder being second-fill barrels. This careful vinification process aims to highlight the wine’s elegance and the vineyard’s unique expression.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns presents a bright garnet red color with purple highlights. The nose is particularly expressive, revealing complex aromas of ripe fruit and spices, along with roasted and smoked notes. On the palate, the wine is very fine and elegant, featuring hints of berries (notably blackberry), spices, and discreet wooden aromas. Its length is remarkable, leaving a lasting impression.
Food & Wine Pairing
This elegant Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck, grilled lamb, or mushroom risotto. Its refined structure and vibrant acidity complement earthy flavors and rich textures, making it a versatile companion to a variety of cuisines. For cheese pairings, consider aged Comté or Brie to enhance the wine’s nuanced profile.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16°C to 17°C (61°F to 63°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1 hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years, developing greater complexity and depth over time.
